I could but I no longer drink, and through the grace of God I and none of my friends never hit anyone when I did. Well actually I occasionally still drink, but only at home or when I am staying overnight somewhere...and even then its rare, young kids get up at 6AM on Saturday and Sunday just like during the week.

I'm currently to be heard muttering dark things about what should be done to drunk drivers, one nearly having killed my wife and daughter a coupla weeks ago. As it happened, they got a way with one broken wrist and a fine collection of bruises and abrasions, but it could very easily have totalled both of them as well as the car.

He likely got off injury free. I, of course, don't know about that specific case, but when I was an EMT... too often the only one to do well was the drunk.

There are physiological/physics reasons. When you are drunk, you tend to relax. Also, often the drunk driver would hit the side of the other car and therefore the drunk would be more "protected".

Nobody but my girls was hurt bad enough to go to the ER.
The truck driver was, well, in a truck.
The drunk (so far as we can tell, it's still obviously a police matter) came to a stop after hitting our car from behind, and was engaged in no further collisions.
I'm not entirtely sure how many other vehicles were involved, but none took more than minor damge. I believe the road barrier was also stronger than our car and crumpled less.

As much as a crumpled car is a pain, it likely saved your daughters lives by absorbing the impact. Something, at least, for which to be thankful.

What I and the people around me at the time used to do was stupid, as I have said, and by the grace of God we never hurt anyone. I am glad everyone was relatively ok in your situation.
