All elected officials should have a salary of $1, with health benefits but no pension. That way we would have what the founders intended citizen legislators rather than career politicians.

It would also save us some money.

Wouldn't that make them even more beholden to wealthy campaing contributors?

I am not a fan of his at all but take Senator Herb Kohl of Wisconsin, he is not beholden to wealthy campaign contributors.

the people seem unable to elect normal candidates who would actually realize a congressional salary as a huge bump in pay.

sorry man, but ANTHNIG that wastes 30%+ of its income is definitely on the table! This goes for every government program in existence. The real waste levels I have heard from 40-even 90%. I will go with 30% on the extreme best case scenario.

I would argue that the gov't absolutely wastes more money than every greedy fat-cat corporations windfall profits, combined...
