Batteries to store the power so you can use it when it's cloudy/night. Currently it's around $8000 to buy a solar system that will power everything in your house except Heat. Before you break even on not buying electricity from the utilities you have to replace the batteries and some of the solar cells.

just saying, my gramps did just fine. It was never about breaking even. It was about utilizing renewable energy and saving his hard earned money to build a better panel and battery and produce a job/worker to help him make a few more solar panel systems and sell a few of them to other people to help them save money....

I promise I will ask for the details next time I see him and share here. He's a great man who just wanted to live off his land and be free. He had a couple acres, with and orchard, vinery, berry forest, maple trees for syurp, dog kennels for breeding, small forest for wood, an acre for corn and other crops. he wired his house with those solar panels, he made his own alcohol and sold all his leftover to produce income (aswell as taxes!) I am pretty sure this lifestyle is what allowed him to save a little extra money to start his own business.

Of course, it helped that senior citizens were not dependent on him to work 60 hours a week to pay his fair share to social security. He was free to use his time to build solar panels.

I do not know, but I remember we always had peaches, and pears, and apples, plums, fresh or canned. There were only like 20 trees total. didnt take up more space than his double garage...

How big do the peaches get in Hinkley?

A mature Italian plum tree takes about a 6 by 6 foot space. Mature Bartlett Pear trees have a "spread" of around 15-20 feet (remember that roots tend to extend out to the distance of the branches). Apples are in between, though there is a LOT of variability with varieties. Peaches are usually a bit bigger than an Italien plum tree, but can be about as big as a pear tree.

For nuts-- Walnuts, Almonds are comparable to a larger apple or pear. HIckory, etc are bigger. I am not familiar with pistachio or Pecans, but they are warmer climate trees anyway. I read about some cold-tolerant apricots, but have no idea if they are worthwhile.

Don't forget berries. They can "ride" a fence and produce as well as inhibiting "transgressors" (bit and large), though you have to net them in most areas if you want to avoid bird pillage.
