Batteries to store the power so you can use it when it's cloudy/night. Currently it's around $8000 to buy a solar system that will power everything in your house except Heat. Before you break even on not buying electricity from the utilities you have to replace the batteries and some of the solar cells.

just saying, my gramps did just fine. It was never about breaking even. It was about utilizing renewable energy and saving his hard earned money to build a better panel and battery and produce a job/worker to help him make a few more solar panel systems and sell a few of them to other people to help them save money....

the matter at hand is using free energy. the matter at hand isn't it's perfection.

I remember it because I broke one of his panels. It was covered with plain old glass. It produced renewable, free energy. he made it himself. it probably, just a guess, costed 100$ to make at that time. just sayin

I promise I will ask for the details next time I see him and share here. He's a great man who just wanted to live off his land and be free. He had a couple acres, with and orchard, vinery, berry forest, maple trees for syurp, dog kennels for breeding, small forest for wood, an acre for corn and other crops. he wired his house with those solar panels, he made his own alcohol and sold all his leftover to produce income (aswell as taxes!) I am pretty sure this lifestyle is what allowed him to save a little extra money to start his own business.

Of course, it helped that senior citizens were not dependent on him to work 60 hours a week to pay his fair share to social security. He was free to use his time to build solar panels.

Neitch! this is about American jobs and American production. Not changing the subject a bit, but you can change the title

I'm in Canada so we don't have the problems regarding social security you do. I probably have more free time than he did. I wish I could find a couple acres, with an orchard, vinery, berry forest, maple trees for syurp, dog kennels for breeding, small forest for wood, an acre for corn and other crops. for less than half a million dollars.

oh, it has to be packaged for you first, I see. No way you could plant the seeds yourself? build the kennel yourself? Your shelter?

an empty plot of land I bet you could find for far under 500k(wtf dude?). Seeds do not cost that much either. I bet you could find a few dogs for free from someone who gives them away. trees usually come with the land. (just answering your next question about you not having 40 years to wait for your maple tree seeds to grow!)

The problem is not having to develop the property. The problem is I need a property that will have access to water and climate required to have a productive orchard.

If it's set up the way you described you'll be lucky to find it for under $2million. I'll keep looking though I've only been at it a decade or so, just need time I guess.

his property was only a few acres, not more than 5...

I have a friend here, in Hinkley MN (the land of 10,000 lakes....) who bought an acre, with the house on it, for 36,000

especially in this depressed market...2million is highly unrealistic, and I wonder if you even know what you are talking about

I do not know, but I remember we always had peaches, and pears, and apples, plums, fresh or canned. There were only like 20 trees total. didnt take up more space than his double garage...

pretty close to a zero carbon footprint though right? obviously not starving either. don't think people are building their own solar panels in a wrath like depression either.

In all fairness, Jimmy Carter was the president, so it's not too far a stretch. people were waiting in 4 hours gas lines, just to get a 5 gallon limit.

Continue to shit on the guy who is building solar panels...

My offer of asking him the questions you requested, the next time I see him, is about as far as it is gonna go. You will just have to wait

How big do the peaches get in Hinkley?

A mature Italian plum tree takes about a 6 by 6 foot space. Mature Bartlett Pear trees have a "spread" of around 15-20 feet (remember that roots tend to extend out to the distance of the branches). Apples are in between, though there is a LOT of variability with varieties. Peaches are usually a bit bigger than an Italien plum tree, but can be about as big as a pear tree.

For nuts-- Walnuts, Almonds are comparable to a larger apple or pear. HIckory, etc are bigger. I am not familiar with pistachio or Pecans, but they are warmer climate trees anyway. I read about some cold-tolerant apricots, but have no idea if they are worthwhile.

Don't forget berries. They can "ride" a fence and produce as well as inhibiting "transgressors" (bit and large), though you have to net them in most areas if you want to avoid bird pillage.
