Scratch health care. I propose we instate a tax on the top 1% of earners so that the government can provide guns to the poor...

That's called compromise.

Yes - Guns help people more than healthcare

Nice priorities
Guns prevent the need for health care.

If 10 guys come up on you, and you have a gun, you are not going to the hospital that night.

Self defense comes wayyyyy before healthcare.
Right, because now potentially 10 other people will be in the hospital, or you'll still get shot. If these 10 guys are truly serious, a gun won't stop them.
I think I saw one of the best arguments AGAINST guns for self-defense on the show "Sons of Guns" (sp?). This guy is anything BUT an anti-gun adovocate. He manufacturers all sorts of armaments, definitely uses them. However, he is realistic. He brought one couple in and showed them what would really happen BEFORE he sold them a gun. He might have lost a small sale, but he card more about safety.

THOSE are the types of people to whom I listen when they say guns for defense are just for experts.

=; You would be guessing wrong. :D In the last 30 years or so, I've been in at least 3 situations where I would likely have been killed if I had not had a firearm at hand. Only had to fire my own weapon once, though. And, no, I am neither a LEO nor am I a criminal.

Funny, in my case (and in the case of my coworkers) I was almost shot by stupid target shooters who seem to think that public woods mean empty woods...and that "being sure of your target" means just looking at the actual target, not around to what would happen if you miss.

But, not, I am no about to start taking people's guns away, either. However, unless you are highly trained, relying upon one for defense is idiotic. I AM very much for teaching gun safety. And I think if the NRA and other such groups paid a bit more real attention to creating a culture of gun safety among gun owners, they would go much further toward improving people's general perception of gun ownership among the non-hunters and the like than this "anyone should own any gun" stance they have adopted.

Yes, I am FULLY aware of kids safety efforts by the NRA and programs to bring guns to youth for sporting. Those efforts just don't go far enough or reach all the correct populations.

You are correct, you will need the coroner instead. They, however, might just require a hospital if you have time to react at all.

What is it opinions are like?

I've been shot twice; I choose to arm myself to protect my loved ones. Especially with the meth problems....my cabin has been broken into and ransacked for fooking COLD medicine - if we had been there, that particular individual would not now be a drain on our prison system; he would be fertilizer.

Anyway, I love the idea.....as the bumper sticker on my truck says, "Criminals Prefer Unarmed Victims".

Now tell me how stupid I am kid ;o)

Note that I said "untrained". You are clearly not "untrained". Most people who try to get handguns for protection are. BIG difference!

(but, there is another issue.. if you have kids, you either leave the guns and ammo where they can potentially get it OR you have it locked up to where it is not readily accessable in most emergency situations. That may not be the case in a hunting cabin, but it is in most homes).

In order to get a hunting license you have to take a Hunter Safety Course, which includes hands-on firing of guns. If you don't pass, you can't get a hunting license. Training is goooooood.

http://www.huntersafetycourse.com/

Guns are great, if you have training. I'd rather see a law passed that required everybody take self-defense classes. Preferably unarmed hand to hand combat classes. Watch this smokin' hot lovely lady take down a dude... (you might have seen the movie)

Player, you forgot the 3rd and by far best option. Teach the kids gun safety and handling at a young age. A child that has been trained with firearms and taught to use them isn't likely to play with one! My girls have had full access to and permission to use my firearms as needed in my absence since they were 12 (17 + 18 now), with no problems. And we're talking about large caliber handguns, deer rifles, and shotguns, all loaded and ready for use. And I'm sure Koolbaks young'uns have had similar training!

I'm surprised how many people here have stared down a gun before. And multiple times no less. We're like action heroes.

In PA, in most states, in fact, what passes for hunter training includes no hands-on training at all. In fact, it includes little of anything. I would like hunters to know a bit more about wildlife ecology (just to understand why laws are what they are, help make positive changes instead of just grousing about why they cannot poach).

As for the rest... self defense is good. Per guns specifically, I see enough idiots with guns out there already. I am not anti-guns, but I AM against idiots having guns. Unfortunately, i don't know how to weed them out without highly curtailing everyone else's use.

Cooincidence of who is posting here. I would not say I have "stared down a gun", though. more like seeing stray bullets pass back when I used to work in the woods. It only happened to me once, but happened on several occasions to my coworkers.

People in PA live close together, but for some reason folks come to the Forest and seem to think that just because they aren't in the city, no one could possibly be around. I have seen that in other forests. Its just here.. its more often false than true.

Huh......I only know Oregon and Washington requirements, which are stringent. In Oregon, for example, at 14 - 17, a young hunter is required to pass a state certified Hunters Safety course - the testing portion is very effective BUT may be taken online so I could see an irresponsible parent fudging THAT. However, the child is then required to pass a Field Test which MUST BE in person at one of the State's certified testing centers...Hands On AND displaying proper knowledge of the previously passed written testing.... subsequent to their successful passing, the youth MUST always hunt with a licensed adult. Prior to 14, there is a Youth Mentored Hunting Program - one simply signs them up and registers with the state - the responsible adult is on the line for proper training, etc. My son has been in this program for 4 yeras and as of this year, he will be required to take the real testing, which he will ace.

I mirror Dawg's opinions above re children and guns; 5 generations of my family have done so and turned out a lot of responsible gun owners. My 13 year old owns 5 guns already.....

If other states do not require hunters to pass these guidelines it is indeed to bad. And, human nature being what it is, there are always going to be the bad seeds out there...I have seen my share of them. Luckily, hunting accidents / attrition have a way of lowering their numbers

Interesting thread.

Well in my state I had to learn that in the winter there isn't enough food for all the deer. If nobody kills any of them, then they all starve and die. If you kill 1/4th of them, then they are weak and their babies die. If you kill 1/2 of them, then the other 1/2 is strong and survives. (The numbers constantly change, it's wildlife management, not slaughter for fun). So killing deer makes the population as a whole stronger.

We also had to shoot guns, present proper cleaning, care, safety inspections etc etc etc. Had to explain why you don't shoot a deer on the top of a hill (if you miss, bullets go over the hill and land where?). I can only speak to WA requirements of hands on training. Can you really speak to "most states"? Or are you just making shit up? Can you really say "it includes little of anything"? Or are you just making shit up? My class was great. It was like 3 months, 2 nights a week, with a final all day event on a Saturday. i was 21 when I took the class, and it was mainly filled with 12 year olds. I hope all classes are as stringent and well presented as mine was.

At least two states operate properly :D

PS - here is the one town I have heard of that requires gun ownership; no injuries / fatalities linked to this and crime has plummeted and population has soared. A 28 year history....interesting.
