Your first suggestion fits just fine, Tanarri. I did some more rejiggering of text for consistency and technological order (Basic Research comes before TSF).

Excellent work TaCktiX! I think that the map part is ready to go at this point.

How's the progress on the XML coming along Oliver?

XML file version 0.30

Post by OliverFA »

I finally did the coding for all the territories. :)

http://www.arrakis.es/~oliverfa/Researc ... 200.30.XML

It took a bit longer than what I thougt. At least I had the help of chip's tool, which made it a lot more easy. I don't know what I would have done without the help of that tool!

I also saw that there has been a couple of changes in the South of the map and adapted the code acordingly. Now we have 172 territories (or regions) ;)

Now I am reviewing the techs part

That's great Oliver! It sounds like we're only 2-3 days away from having the first draft of the XML finished?

I have to say, after trying to load the XML and watching it take around a minute to load, it scares me a little in how well it may run with BOB and/or Clickables. It's too bad that there's not a more efficient way of coding the conscriptions.

This is definitely not a map that can be played with bob, I have to tell you.

The good news is that most all of it is straightforward, and for the most part the bonuses are distinct enough to be determinable from others if you're in fog.

EDIT: Oliver, we went with Esternan instead of Easternan and Warton instead of Wilbon. A quick Find/Replace should fix it.

I still need to optimize the continents part. Hopefully that will reduce the size a lot. But the 3000 lines of the geographic part can't be reduced. Let's see what happens with the 40.000 lines of the continent part

New version of the file

http://www.arrakis.es/~oliverfa/Researc ... 200.32.XML

Only techs remaining to check: Open Conscription and Advanced Mining

I think this means we are very close to the end of the begining, and thus the begining of the end.

Size reduced from 1,434 KB in the version 0.30 to 661 KB in this version. Hope this helps.

Congratulations for advancing final to the Final Forge (sorry if I'm a bit late) - can't wait to see this in action.
But... It was so artistically done.

Oliver, for what it's worth, I'm pretty sure that the <required>2</required> tags aren't necessary in mining for the '# mines w/Mining' bonus, since there's only the two components. Not a big deal, but it'll trim 40 lines of code out of the XML and probably 1-2k off the file size and I get the feeling every little bit is gonna help.

Otherwise it's all looking great once OC gets trimmed down. From what I could tell, once that gets fixed there's probably going another small drop in file size as well. That'll probably trim another 20-40k off the file, though that's really just a guess at this point.

Great work and I'm looking forward to playing the map soon :)

That's a very good observation. Thanks for noticing it. Probably the size won't be reduced much, but I bet that decoding time will benefit from not having to process those tags.

Let's see if this night the XML can be finished (fingers crossed)

I am sure that some (and maybe more than some) corrections and balance tweaks will have to be made to the file. But I believe we have everything needed to begin playtesting.

Thanks for the info. Will do ASAP.

Edit: Just uploaded the file in the syntax checker and received the error "<continents> tag was not expected here". Seems that it was too easy to catch me

Now I can't track bugs here at work, but this evening will try to fix the file so the tool likes it. I am confident it wont be too hard :)

Edit (again): Ok, I could not resist and got some time to run the tests. Now there are no syntax errors. Addressing warnings... ;)

How does the territory position check happen? Is that something that you would take care of yourself or is that something that gets posted and everyone can have a look to see how it lines up?

EDIT: Wow, this is my 150th post in the thread :o

To be honest, I just learned today thanks to natty_dread. I was using chipv's tool, that gives a decent aproximation. But looks like this page gives real values. It also checks for XML syntax

Go to this page

http://www.conquerclub.com/mapmaker/index.php

You will need those values!

XML URL: http://www.arrakis.es/~oliverfa/Researc ... .36.01.XML
MAP URL (big): http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/4919 ... 8large.jpg
MAP URL (small): http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/3331 ... 7small.jpg

And enjoy!

PS: How can you count your posts in the thread? Or is this your most active thread?
