However if you put a big shot on when playing proper rugby (no padding), they hurt a shitload. But seeing as i've never played NFL i can't know whether hits in that game hurt the same as in rugby. Rugby is an extremely physical game, especially in the forwards and when you've got a 110kg winger running 100m in less than 10.5 at you. For all americans look up Lomu for NZ he was a beast of a player, probably more physical than AD (AP) or any RB in the NFL.

Another thing, if anyone has played both sports, ii personally think defence in Rugby is SO much better than in NFL. Defence in NFL looks pretty flimsy at times, but in rugby it has to be rock solid.

To all american's not paying out your sport, i love watching NFL and playing it when i get sick of rugby or touch footy, just offfering my opinion

Not that I'm disagreeing or anything but the most physical player in football would be a linebacker, not a running back.

Like I said, I think rugby's more violent. That being said, if you teach a team of football players how to play rugby (or if they already knew), they would kill any rugby team in the world. You have guys who weigh in excess of 300 pounds who run 4.5 40-yard dashes.

That may not be true. While big hits are visually pleasing to us observers, its not the be all and end all of Rugby(or Gridiron for that matter). The Pacific Islanders are renowned for big hitting tackles, but they dont win many big games.

Not just talking about big hits here. Talking about speed, accleration, agility, blocking, and teamwork. You got guys in the NFL running 4.3 40s with pads on. Imagine them without all those pads. Recievers and tight ends are used to running up and blocking for ball carriers, as are the O-linemen. Even DBs will be blockers. Plus there the linebackers with speed, power, and size. Average about 6'2-6'3 and around 230-240 lbs. Running around a 4.40-4.50 yard dash. And that's without pads.

In the NFL, big hits are only a small part of what defenses do.

we've talked about big hits, but what about stepping? (in aussie and nz we call it stepping), ie side step juking, basically evasive skills... who do you think has the better stepping/evasive skills, a rugby union centre/winger or an NFL running back or wide receivers (im guessing wide receivers are pretty good with footwork once they get the ball right?, like i've seen some randy moss and he's good with footwork)

i think both styles in rugby and NFL are different, i saw a play from AP where he kept juking and stood up a defender flat footed and then did a final step to get past, where in rugby its usually just one massive inside step catching defenders wrong footed. thoughts?

(Using this video as an example of rugby "steps": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQYJhcWh ... re=related )

My first reactions:
1. wow, they are horrible tacklers
2. Wow, they lateral a lot more than the NFL

In a lot of these videos, a lot of the defenders will let the guy with the ball just blow past them without even thinking about it. It looks really, really bad. I know if anyone let that happen in the NFL they'll get destroyed by the coach. Just watch as the runner in this gets the outside edge; the defenders literally give up, even if they're still ahead of the runner.

If you want the best "steppers" in the NFL, look at Mike Vick. If you've seen any of my posts during the football season you'd know that I have a hard-on for Vick because he plays a lot like me; he'll get in trouble and then just fake the hell out of defenders to get out of the backfield. Also, watch Devin Hester punt returning. He's the undisputed best kick returner in NFL history.

I think NFL is more designed for stepping. The way the game works it wouldn't really be beneficial to ever take a tackle in NFL(with a few exceptions), but in rugby taking a tackle and playing the ball quickly can give you a bigger advantage than taking the time to step and letting the defence line up.

Anyone watch the start of NRL today?

Ha! I was at the Warriors/Eels game. Between a stupid ref (at one point half the stadium was chanting "ref's a wanker" ) and the some of the Warriors losing any ability to catch the ball, Eels managed to scrape out a win.

I think AF is both designed and allows for more stepping. 11 players on at a time compared to 15 in rugby should mean there's more space (even though your guys are bloody massive). With rugby, (keep in mind this is mostly from watching All Black games) our players can be pretty slippery, but for the most part there's a pretty solid wall of defence, there'll be 3 players taking you down. Which is why it's all about lateral play. You flick the ball out wide, look for gaps in the line, and if there aren't any, you press a side and draw them. I think you guys do that too in AF? It just happens over a few more tackles in rugby.

Did not expect that! Cracked up the other night at a Super 15 game, we had two props out on the wing giving support!
Because of rugby's fluidness, while everyone has their positions, they're not as set in stone as AF
