Hey Woody, did you know that if you edit your opening post, you can fix the title of the thread?

I know, huh? It's hard to believe the senate would put the "protection" of mosquito infested mudholes in urban industrial areas ahead of them.

Yeah, I know. I decided to leave it "as was" in recognition of my eminent dumnassedness.

I have no idea at all what that is supposed to mean.

From what I heard, that's not exactly true. It is true that military members would not be paid during a shutdown, but the whole truth is that they are only paid once a month. So they'll still get paid on time if the government is re-opened on pay day. If the shutdown does not overlap with their pay day, then there will be no pay lost or delayed for the members of the military.
Yes, that's absolutely correct, though it's twice per month. I didn't mean to mis-lead anyone...I sort of failed to remember that wasn't common knowledge. Thanks for the clarification.

Sorry, that comment wasn't directed toward you. It was directed toward the typical talking point provided by the politicians. And yes, that's what happens when you let politicians vote for their own pay: they will make sure they get their money regardless of the circumstances.

I did. Dammit.

As I understand things, our troops in Afghanistan will not be paid (but almost certainly will be back-paid, of course). But get this...Congress still gets paid. f*ck Congress.

They sent up a continuing resolution JUST FOR MILITARY PAY to Obama, and he vetoed it. he's playing political games. Also, I agree. In my job, if I screw something up, I stay and work without pay to fix it. It should be the same with the Government employees.
That's interesting. Are you sure it was "JUST FOR MILITARY PAY"? As I understand it they added some anti-abortion riders to the resolution. Would you agree that adding such riders constitute political games?

Having actually lived through, worked through the last shutdown, your understanding is not correct. Among other issues, back then there was no question that employees would be paid eventually. Now, there definitely is a question. Even so, my paycheck was delayed by 2 weeks. It did not impact me because I was single, had my bills paid up and had already planned a vacation even. All the credit card companies, most local billers waived late charges for any federal employee. I still remember then Congressman Gene Taylor putting up his paycheck and that of all of his staff to help any federal employee unable to meet bills.

And, I can remember taking up a collection so a coworker could get his kids Christmas presents (He was going to put everything on credit, but folks found out and basically forced the cash on him. He tried to repay us all later.. we told him to donate it to charity)

Today, armed personnel might get that sort of assistance/aid, but its doubtful other federal employees will experience the largess. They likely won't even be paid.

No, I think it was 2 weeks, but 2 full weeks. I applied for unemployment benefits, but the state made the decision to not process them unless and until it came about that we were not going to be paid retroactively. So, basically, had we not been paid, we would have had our unemployment delayed as well.

I wasn't concerned the whole time. I was really looking forward to it actually. People would have had the opportunity to realize that the federal government in many respects isn't really that necessary.

I must admit that even though it was going to result in a delay in my being paid, I was as well.

Yeah. Let's see....they're gonna lockout non-essential workers.

Why the f*ck are we paying for no-essential workers to begin with?
"Non essential mean people who won't cause imminant harm if they are off a few days. It does not mean "non essential" as you are trying to interpret it. They include things like people who process mortgages for HUD, some janitors, most National Park employees (the parks close), etc.

Then again, this seems to be another case where you have criticized me without first verifying if YOU were correct:
(I highlighted the truly critical part at the bottom)
Explanation:
The primary definition of the adjective “eminent” is prominent or distinguished. For example, an eminent professor would be an appropriate use of the adjective. The primary definition of the adjective “imminent” is likely to occur at any moment. For example, the imminent landfall of the hurricane would be an appropriate use of the adjective.

The challenge with these two words is that they sound fairly alike, especially when speakers are careless with pronunciation. Careless pronunciation by speakers seems to lead to misuse by those listeners who are ignorant that these are two distinct words.

Solution:
Use “eminent” when you want to refer to someone who is distinguished, prominent, or high in repute; use “imminent” when you want to label something as likely to happen at any moment.

But, you could just check any dictionary.
