Help! Relatively new to CC only 40 games in but was wondering what determines who takes the first turn in new games

no it's completely random, you can't build a strategy around it, except maybe for freestyle, but i wouldn't recommend freestyle unless you are really active.

As stated earlier there is no way to tell who has first turn and in freestyle both people can play at the same time but the person who deploys first will have the advantage to begin their turn first (as soon as they do the other person can as well) for the first half of the round. I believe there is a suggestion to make it that you can see who is going to begin.
