The only reason you would use that term is to intentionally offend Christians. If you have a legitimate point, fine, but that is trolling.. actually it is more than trolling, it is plain offensive.
Not trying to offend anyone, I believe Jesus was considered a Satanist in his time. I already posted my point on this, I do not have to explain my posting any further. Not being a troll, I am stating my opinion. People get offended over lots of things in the forums, that doesn't mean everyone that says that Ron Paul sucks or that Communism blows are trolling. They are expressing their point of view.

Jesus was a Satanist, that's my opinion.

You're a bizarre leftist ideologue who can rationalize anything, especially when it comes to demonizing anyone who has more wealth than you.

Anyways to the point of the topic raised, Jesus Christ was not a leftist or right winger. He cared more about peoples' souls and their eternal salvation. The ideological makeup of his 12 disciples was far more divisive than anything we've got here in modern American politics. For crying out loud, Judea was under occupation by the imperialistic Romans, and he could have gotten involved but constantly turned down those chances. He was more concerned about getting people into heaven for eternity than temporary political power here on this earth.

Player, why do you choose to abdicate YOUR commands as a Christian (as you claim to be) and the Church as a whole to take care of those in need and turn them over to the government?? Shouldn't YOU be the one helping others, not demanding that the government do it for you?

The is no problem with what liberals today stand for, there is a problem with too many people thinking the right wing's DISTORTION is what liberalism really means. If liberalism today really stood for what you think, then why are the definitions above consistant?
I don't think the right wing distorts your definition. It has become quite apparent by their actions that liberals do not stand for any sort of individualism over the collective.
To whom do you refer? Ralph Nadar?

You referred to Obama! AGAIN, the problem is not that liberals have changed what they stand for, the problem is that liberals have been largely SILENT, and have let the conservatives try to redefine the terms.
patrickaa317 wrote: If you feel that they feel the individual is more important than in institution please let me know why:

- A universal healthcare has been implemented but exceptions are given to different institutions but not to individuals.
What on EARTH makes you think that was a liberal idea? The liberal idea is to have true universal healthcare, a true public option.
patrickaa317 wrote: - I have to pay for a public education system whether my child attends there or does not.
This IS fundamental. Education of ALL is necessary for a free running democracy. Without education, there is no freedom, becuase not telling kids about ideas is even more stifling than not allowing them to express or live them.
patrickaa317 wrote: - We have a progressive tax rate where it is based upon your lifestyle and not what you need in return from the government.
- A person can not choose to take a job for certain companies in most states without becoming a part of that union.
These have nothing to do with being liberal. They are right wing bastardizations that have been allowed because liberals have not been stepping forward politically.
patrickaa317 wrote: Please review liberal politicians actions and compare them to your definition. Your definition does not fit with their behavior.
First Name a liberal politician. I cannot think of one currently.
patrickaa317 wrote: This has nothing to do with how a right wing person has distorted anything. It has to do with the actions of the politicians that feel they fall under the term liberal.
No, it absolutely DOES have to do with right wing distortions, because most of what you wish to call, what THEY call "liberal" is just anyone opposing their most arrogant agendas.. not true liberal anything, just not quite as far right as they wish.

Like I said, read the definitions. If you have another printed definition, not by a conservative group (I already covered that!), the present it.[/quote]

The conservatives did not define liberalism as it is today, the liberal politicians did. Why is it that hard to understand.

The healthcare bill dubbed "Obamacare" written by Max Baucus was passed through the house solely by democrats. If liberals didn't want this version, why the hell did they vote for it?

I agree education is fundamental to a great country but why is the public option forced upon everyone and if they want an alternative they have to pay for it out of their own pocket, thus making all less fortunate families subject to the public education system with no alternative choice. Seems to benefit the institution more than the individual.

The unions and liberals are in each others pocket books as much as the conservatives are with [fill in the blank here].

Liberal politicians (just a couple off the top of my head):
John Kerry
Nancy Pelosi
Harry Reid
Dick Durbin
Chuck Shummer
Barbara Boxer
Chris Dodd

Actions speak louder than definitions.

Wait, is PLAYER equating the modern-day, political stance "Liberal" with "(neo)-classical liberalism"?

Those two aren't the same at all.

True, but the reality of life is that we have to live in both the political world and the faith one. Christ fully realized this and showed us how to live.

What is perpetuated by the Right as "Christianity" is nothing more than theocratic dictatorship. That debate has absolutely persisted within the church.. aka the Byzantine Empire, Rome, etc. It is a valid debate.

His word was used millenia ago. and, is only debatably used appropriately even with the explanation.

The term I apply IS used in modern times, but the right wing has very recently distorted it, and then ironically enough, Democrats, etc all began to go along with that distortion because those parties were all buying inot the corporate control mentality. . That distortion very much was within my lifetime, has NOT been universally adopted and I am perfectly within reason to use it.

No, again, that is how conservatives wish to paint it up. In fact, what liberals want are more job training, better education, and local food buying.
Do want to know the REAL reason, just to name one example, why all vegetables, even potatoes and onions have to be refrigerated??? Think a minute before answering. (I shrank my answer to hide it)
The REAL reason is that it means local food tasts the same as food trucked from Timbuktu. The biggest advantage of buying truly local is that it has not been refrigerated

It was actually conservatives who wanted our current food program structured the way it is, have made sure its not truly modified. Why? Food stamps cash just fine! I used to shop in an area that had a very high unemployment and therefore welfare rate (also part Indian reservation.. pre casino, that is). Guess what happened the last week of every month, when Welfare checks arrived? Prices went UP. That is technically illegal, but its pretty hard to prove. Unless you went out of your way to shop at different times, you would never know.

No, that is yet another story.. but an appropriate one for this thread, none-the -less. It is not an often cited text, because it is a difficult one. The only reason I know of it is that our pastor did a sermon on it a few months ago. I will try to find it.

Having a Democracy changes some things. Even so, the government's job is minimal. It still is there, however.

No, actually you don't, though nice how you combine modern FEMA with the more general taking care of the poor. I have another thread on FEMA, so I will leave that bit lie. Its nothing to do with this. (not as you imply, anyway)

Per the poor? Efficient? No, what you see is multiple groups doing exactly the same thing grouped in bigger cities while rural areas go largely without. Its anything BUT efficient. If you think it is, you have little direct experience with any breadth. There are individual groups that do a good job, but as the whole, its a lot of waste.

By contrast, the government's school lunch programs works very well. Every parent gets a form at the beginning of the year, which they can fill out. Each child already has a meal card. The kids don't know, cafeteria staff don't know, who is getting free and who is getting paid meals. Even the food surplus program, while I object to it as a whole, has a reasonable distribution system attached.

LOL... what does having poor in the inner cities have to do with liberals? You will have to explain that one!

The poor are grouped into ghettos for a lot of reasons, but mostly not to do with liberalism.. One part that you have correct is that some liberals did buy into the idea that to shift people to what began as decent apartments, housing, would provide some benefit. It was an idea, a dream that failed.. utterly. That something fails is not indicative that no one cares. It means sometimes the best of intentions go wrong, that that was one. Evne so, I would argue that the REAL thrust of that was not the liberals, it was the big contractors who saw dollar signs from being able to build them.. and who quickly found ways to cut corners, etc.

No.

A couple things happened, but in the US, in VERY recent times, the right has firmly and completely based their success on blaming liberals and the government for all ills.. a nice way to divert attention from the emergeance of almost impenatrable corporate state that we see today.

There has also been a gradual change of liberalism. All ideas do shift in time. However, that is not what is happening here and now.

Which politicians today and in the past have represented through their actions the term "Liberal" in accord with the political philosophy of classical liberalism?

I'm having difficulty understanding (1) what "Liberal" means in the past and in modern times and (2) who actually in the government represented it...

On the whole, Jesus comes down more on the liberal side. Unsurprisingly, he's kind of a complex figure, and doesn't fit neatly into one side or the other. Neither do people, for that matter (Nightstrike, I exclude you as I think you were built by Fox News).

Not sure about the etymology of the word "Satan". However, I was always taught that Satan is about turning one's back on, or being removed from God.

Jesus was a Satanist.
Calling him a Shaitan is not antithecal to his being liberal. In fact, it could be consistant if your description is correct. However, though you attempt to disguise it, the primary reason to call Jesus Satan is to show disdain for Christians who post here.

Not particularly original, nor are you really saying much here.

I don't know. I can't really speak for Jesus or God but, apparently not.
Can we agree he was not a tyrant?

CreepersWiener wrote:The atheistic point of view would be one that would compare Jesus' way of thinking with philosophies and ideologies we are familiar with in our own society. Jesus challenged the Jewish hierarchy, therefor he was a rebel and an anarchist. If you lived in those times, Jesus would have been known as a "Shaitan" or a "Satan", which is to say that he was one that disagreed with the leading point of view. Jesus himself had his own "Satan" in his circle. His name was Judas. The "Shaitan" was not an uncommon term, as it was reserved for those who were close to their kings or leaders. The king or leader depended on the "shaitan" to disagree with his point of view. This helped the leader to not make mistakes. So the argument could be made that Jesus was more of a "Satanist" than he was a liberal.
Not Satanist in the way the word has ever been used in recent times. In fact, you are pretty well distorting the old terms.. seemingly with intention.

If you have a real point, though present it.
Player - Can you use the word "Liberal" as it was defined at one point but not used in recent times but Creepers can not with the word "Satanist"?
His word was used millenia ago. and, is only debatably used appropriately even with the explanation.

The term I apply IS used in modern times, but the right wing has very recently distorted it, and then ironically enough, Democrats, etc all began to go along with that distortion because those parties were all buying inot the corporate control mentality. . That distortion very much was within my lifetime, has NOT been universally adopted and I am perfectly within reason to use it.
Perhaps the past Liberals actually fell out of accord with the ideas of Classical Liberalism, thus changing the term "Liberal" into its modern form?

+1 on this. Thank you BBS for simplifying what I was trying to say earlier.
taking a break from cc, will be back sometime in the future.

Again I can't really speak for him but I'm gonna say "no, he probably wouldn't endorse taking from people that work for a better life and giving it to people that sat around all day getting high on frankincense and whining about how effed up their lives are because somebody has something they don't."

There was only one theocratic-ordained government in all of history, and that was Israel. You keep alleging things like the above post with a broad brush which encompasses anyone who doesn't view economics, philosophy of origins, or social justice through your little personal prism as "right wing" or "the right". In my time here, you've feigned thread after thread as to wanting to discuss things, and the minute someone offers anything remotely different than viewing society as a class struggle between the oppressors vs. the oppressed, you start with this "right wing is guilty" rhetoric. I've seen you annihilated by the likes of Iz Man, Nobunaga, Luns, Jimboston, and most recently, Saxitoxin (the funniest of them all). You have little understanding of history, economics, or science despite your claims to such. Your little song and dance has never changed, ever since the time I first started reading your posts. I fly with many people who are liberal-minded in my profession, but yours is a blind obedience which shuts out any chance of rational discourse.

As already pointed out, Jesus is neither a liberal or conservative.
