DiM wrote:i played this map with my wife and 3 friends. the first match was a bit odd meaning everybody tried new ways to adapt to the map style.
one guy went straight for the pirate cove and all the treasures. (he got kicked rather fast :)

me and my wife went just for key resources not bothering with other teritories. and the other 2 people went the old style to conquer continents.
as i said the guy that went for the treasures got kicked in the first rounds. me and my wife got kicked afterwards and the old style of play won. why? because the bonuses are wrong.

in the current system owning 2 res and a product gives you +2 if you go ahead and take a market you get another +2 for a total of +4. the problem is that if someone takes one of your resources you lose all the bonuses. so in the second game we altered a bit the bonus system.

2resources+product=+3
product + market +2 (and you don't need to hold the resources like the current system)
taking a product to a foreign market = +3

this new system went much better because we removed the achiles heel (the importance of resources) and because we increased the foreign market bonus (making people to be more agressive and expand)

the second game was a much more disputed. very agressive and much more balanced. in the end my wife won. she started in green and then expanded to blue. with a help of a glitch in red. this glitch was the gringo rum. basicaly she took duna and ricota for a +2 bonus then took puerto allegre puerto tranquillo gringo and colato. now she had 2 products 2 markets and 2 harbours to connect. this way she got +10 bonus. so basically we discovered that having a product near a harbour makes the bonuses too easy to get. we also decided +3 for taking a product to a foreign market is too much so we lowered it to +2

so here's what modification i've done to the map.
*switched water from Rompas to Gringo and rum from Gringo to Rompas
*switched Terra Nerra clothes with Parancas dye
*switched Fajone cotton with Torales clothes
*inserted the new bonus system.
*inserted Kupo666's story
*made the logo straight

here is the original post.

it's quite simple. just print out any map and play on it with your friends :)

also i'm still considering your suggestions don't worry. i was just waiting to see if others share your point of view.

Ohhh....English isn't your native Language?

It isn't mine either, and I understood it after a closer look. The problem is not there, if people who speak English as their first language can't understand, either it's too complicated ( not really..) to be placed on the map, either they arent willing to understand.

But..let me see if the wording could be changed anyway...

Edit:

I would add after ''Pirate cove + a treasure: +1''

--Pirate cove + 2 treasures : +2. Etc.

Just to make things really clear. And there is the space for it.

I would cut the 3rd line into 2 sentences. One for moving the product across the continent, the other for moving it to another continent. Also changing ''source'' to ''product'' and ''destination'' to ''market''.

Just my 2 cents.

i'll do it in the next update and see if it works better.,

hey dim i printed your map and had a really hard look at it.....

1. Instead of harbours connect to each other....Make it harbours acan attack each other...

2. Get ready of the Pirate cove and treasure...It just really confuses the gameplay and complicates matters...This is a new concept your brining to CC...The map after is not a treasure map or a pirates map..But a merchants map!

I love the fact that 2 people will be able to battle it out on a continent for resources but this will only happen in a 6 player game because you have 6 markets, so in a 5 player game or less people will aoid conflict and just settle in to get the nearest market....

Now here are my suggestions:

1..limit the markets in the map to four to make them unique....

2.If you have 2 resources on continent = 1 point
if you have 3 resources on continent = 2 points
if you have 4 resources on continent = 3 points
if you also own the market on same continent = 4 points
if you won another market on another continent you can TRADE ( you must have harbour connection for both contients) = 6 points

This would make it easier and in reality without a market yor resources are worth sumthing but when you trade professionaly they are worth are alot more...When you start to export goods they are worth even more....

This is how the map works already. You just changed his words, the bonuses, removed the products....

tomorrow i'll take a good look at the recent suggestions and present a few implementations. at the moment i'm at work and i don't feel to good so i'm not in the mood for map making

i'm home now and i feel ready for map making after a good 9 hour sleep.

now here are the latest proposals:

mibi wrote:every territory has a resource. two types of resources pair up to form a product. each main land mass has their particular resource set, and one resource set that is spread out over all the continents.

i like it to an extent. what you are proposing is this.
6 continents each with a unique pair of res = 12 resources
1 pair in all continents = 2 resources.
now each pair forms a product so 6 products.
i actually like it but thre is 1 big issue. the legend. imagine having to add so many icons plus having to make 7 diagrams instead of 2. i think it would be better if i published a manual :)

the res in every terit part, i don't quite like. somehow i'm sure people could start with huge bonuses  especially in a 3 player game.

mibi wrote:now if you have a resource pair and a market on the same continent you get a bonus. if you have two harbors and a resource pair you get a bonus. if you have a 'factory' you get a bonus for every resource pair you have. and for the pirates cove, if you have the pirates cove you get a bonus for each harbor you have.

and what about the products? you get nothing from owning them?

mibi wrote:if you think about it, its a bit more intuitive. since you get a bonus for take one resource to another landmass. before you get a bonus for taking resources to another landmass which has the same resources, so it doesnt make sense. taking resources to the market gets you a bonus but if you have a 'factory' that can 'combine' the resource pairs its like a multiplier. and instead of the pirates looking for treasure (just another icon on the map) the pirates act as real pirates, preventing merchants from sailing by going after the harbors.

actually taking a product to a market that already has that product is not unrealistic. if you go to your local store you'll see many products that are the same and come from different countries. they differ in quality, price, etc. it's like the real world. competition.

mibi wrote:i think the legend would be easier to display this way. what do you think?

i don't think it would be easier, unless a new way of representing it comes to mind. keeping the current representation system, the legend would become huge. 20+ icons legend + 7 diagrams + some written text = one huge legend that causes even more confusion.

freezie wrote:I would add after ''Pirate cove + a treasure: +1''

I would cut the 3rd line into 2 sentences. One for moving the product across the continent, the other for moving it to another continent. Also changing ''source'' to ''product'' and ''destination'' to ''market''.

for the pirate cove rewording i'll use this because i don't have the space to write ''Pirate cove + a treasure: +1'' --Pirate cove + 2 treasures : +2. Etc.

Code: Select all

For each treasure you own you get +1 if you also have Pirate Cove

the second idea you proposed does not work because source means both product and resource and destination means both factory and market.
so here's how i'll do it:

Code: Select all

->To transport something across the same continent you must own the source and the destination.
->Only products can be transported across water and you need 2 harbours to connect the land masses for an extra bonus of 2.

1. harbours also do the job of transporting products, not just attacking. so i want to make it clear that they connect not just attack.
2. the pirate cove is an important aspect. there were plenty of pirates back in those days and they played an active role. the pirate cove + treasure thing are just a minimal way of implementing the pirates without taking away the attention from the real purpose of becoming a great merchant. actually at first i had other ideas for implementing pirates but the current game engine does not allow such radical changes :(
3. having 6 markets is ok with me. if i put let's say only 3 markets it means some unlucky fellows will have a hard life in the begining of the game because without markets you can't get the big bonuses. so in a 6 player game everybody has a chance of getting one market, but they will still have to battle because they need to expand. it's like the classic map that has 6 continents. one for each but that doesn't mean they'll settle for just one. everybody is going for the second and third and so on.

well actually resources aren't worth a rusty penny unless you can trade them. in the current system you take the resources to a product factory hence the bonus. but in your system you get bonus for simply owning resources and not trading them which is rather unrealistic.

well whats the point of putting up good suggestions if you refuse them all

Fro examples : Indians have resources they share between themselves in their village....Along some the spanish (haerbour) and now their resources are worth alot more and shipped off to spain via the market and connecting point!!!

i'm going for an old map feeling. i really haven't seen any old maps with bright colours.

i'm not refusing sugestions i'm just commenting on what has been proposed. i simply stated my opinions on the proposed issues. anybody is free to speak and bring valid reasons. i did not refuse anything without bringing a valid reason first.

i'm not so sure what you are trying to say here :?
maybe a bit of rephrasing would help

after looking through the ideas i've come up with this solution:

6 continents 6 resources.

each resource is in 2 spots on the same continent. so let's say upper left island has 2 sugar cane spots, lower left island has 2 cattle spots, etc.
each continent also has a market and a factory.

owning the resource pair and the market gives +1. basic selling of resources.
owning a foreign market and 2 harbours to connect brings another +2 for a total of 3. expanding to foreign markets is very profitable.
owning a factory acts as a multiplier. because refining the resources into products is always more profitable than selling the resources. so each factory multiplies by 2 your income.

what do you think? is this easier to understand?
i'll post an image later.

so if you own two resources and sell to a foreign market and you own all factories you get 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 64?

i like the new system but the resource pairs baffle me. alligators and cows? shells and... shells?

I also think the pirates cove should get a bonus for eeach harbor it has, this have it function like real pirates who deny trade.

yep. that's how the multiplier works. i'm not very satisfied because it can lead to huge numbers. and i was thinking i could add less factories but then some people would be in a really tough position because less factories means some continents will be without.

alligator skins and cow skins. go to a skin thng factory :)

different types of shells make different types of necklaces.

actually the resources don't really matter what they are.

i thought of the pirates getting a bonus for harbours but my idea of a negative bonus for others due to embargo reasons can't be implemented.

i coul get rid of the treasure spots and give +1 for each harbour you own (if you also own pirate cove). giving bonus for both harbours and treasures make thing too damn complicated.

come to think of it it's a nice solution of making the players fight even more for the harbours. i like it.

i'll post the image in a few minutes.

here.

also i've been thinking about the multiplyer. can it be 1.5 instead of 2?
or can i code it so it only multiplies for certain things? like you only get the local resource bonus multiplied but not the foreign market one?

Pretty sure Multipliers won't work...

Bonuses have to be set to whole numbers...

with a X2 multiplier you always get whole numbers.

Yeah but what I mean is you can't put "x2" as the continent bonus...

You would have to work out all the possible combinations for each resource etc and then work out how to remove them all if you had half combos etc...

Basically - It won't work very easily...

Stick to addition bonuses instead of multipliers...

ok i got it. the multiplication works but only by repeated addition not by direct multiplication.

then the solution is fairly simple factories add +1 if you own te resource pair on the same continent.
it's fairly logical. you refine the resources on that continent and you get the extra profit.
the gameplay should be fairly easy to understand now. anybody got any questions?

There are a couple of graphical overlaps between the bottom continent and the rules where the 2 colours merge to make a 4th colour... can you eliminate them?
