looks beautiful, and the legend too ;)

1 little comment :

I think it's better to rename West Africa to Maghreb (or North Africa like in "old" classic map)

Thanks. Maghreb sounds good, I'll change it.

Two possible mountain styles that I'm considering for the map:

The mountains around Nepal and Delhi look nice and would seem to fit the map better than the grey worms. Would only worry about being able to see them on the small map though but I would assume you would colour them slightly different from the regions?

No, actually I'd colour them like in the example. I might add some very slight shading though.

Anyway, I'm going to wait until the gameplay is stamped before I start working on them.

Ok, I lied. More variations on the mountains...

Personally, I like the ones on the right best.

In regards to mountains, of the ones you've displayed, I like the middle...probably because of their 'height' and they don't seem squished like the other two examples.

Natty, is there any other possible place for the region bonus description that is under the abbreviations? It kind of gets lost there and looks like it all abbreviation stuff.

Yeah maybe... I just like the line style and shading of the right ones more.

Well, all I can think of is swapping it with the "striped regions" text, which might be ok since the function of the striped regions is pretty intuitive anyway... would it help?

I think of the mountains you have displayed, the right ones are my favorite. I'd like to see them look a little more dimensional and a little less cone like. I don't know, something a little more uhh... texured. Also I like the shading on the left ones.

Well, anyway, there's plenty of time to decide about the mountains, I'm not adding them on the map before the gameplay is done...

However, here's a solution I figured out for putting all the relevant information in one place - it makes for a smaller title but I think it's an ok trade.

Natty, you can probably change 'West Indonesia" region to Sumatra. The area of the map you depict seems to be mostly that island (and it fits with the Borneo naming scheme).

In terms of the title area for the info, I think it could work. It looks a little strange all run together, since you really have 3 separate points, but I am not sure you can do anything about that, since adding bullets or some sort of indicator would create an imbalance with your center justification.

I had it as Sumatra before, but some person or two complained that Java wasn't included on the map, so I renamed the area so that it represents both Sumatra & Java. I think this was the best compromise between not having the region and having to increase the height of the map just to add a small strip of land that's irrelevant to the gameplay. (I personally feel that 1000 pixels is the maximum height that is comfortable to play on.)

Well, I think I can do something about that, but it'll probably have to wait until after gp stamp...

I like the new look, though I do miss some of the deep ocean texture in the previous.

Minor gripe: why Eastern Asia and not East Asia? You use Southeast Asia, Near East, and The West, but add "-ern" for the others.

Well, you can't have it all...

Eastern Europe is to distinguish it from the bonus East Europe, and Eastern Asia is to be consistent with Eastern Europe. I know, it's not perfect but I can't think of a better arrangement...

For consistency you might want to use the label "North Europe" rather than "Nordics" too.

Nordics is the accurate term. North Europe is a wider definition that also includes the Baltics & UK.

More generally, I'd like to avoid using names based on cardinal directions where possible - unfortunately on this map there are lots of places where there aren't any other choices (at least that I can see), but where it can be avoided I'd like to do so.

So I changed the impassables a bit - I added mountain between Switzerland/Italy and moved the Afghanistan/Iran mountain to Turkmenistan/Iran. I think the rest of them are pretty much good, here's the impassables as doodles again:

I'd extend the Carpathians to block the Hungary Romania border.

Sorry ... quick question!
Why do you have the continent values so high?? 7 seens a bit steep to me ... what sort of games will be played on it? Team?

Not sure what the "norm" is here :?

The norm is to base bonus values on how hard it is to conquer and defend them.
