Remebreance - Anzac Day in Australia - April 25th.

Post by cairnswk »

Perhaps this is the wrong place to make this post and perahps I'll get shot down (in my plane) for it...but I simply want to say that while we develop these maps that glorify WAR and battle, today April 25th we celebrate ANZAC Day in Australia; a day when we remember all those both Australian, New Zealanders and from overseas, who gave their lives for the freedoms of our nations in past and current wars.
Lest we forget!

Started with the ANZAC's disastrous effort at Gallipoli in 1915 during World War 1, as a result of incompetent command at the hands of the British. Essentially this was Australia's (and NZ's) 'coming of age'. Since then all other fights that Australia has been part of have had an Australian in charge of Australians.

We do not say 'Happy ANZAC day'.

This is not a celebration like Christmas or a birthday, it is a remembrance, some may say a tribute, to all our soldiers in all past and indeed current engagements.

We may/often use the phrase 'Lest we forget' when paying our respects to those who gave their lives so we may enjoy the freedoms we now have.

Who did you go for Captain Crash in the AFL game today?

Please not Collingwood.
What was the final score? I didn't watch it.

I love you, I was born in Perth and I'm a WCE supporter.
Woot.

And damn, I really don't like Collingwood, I went to their game against Port and the fans have no idea what the rules are, they just call out ball all the time, even deliberate. Quite annoying.

yes catseyegate. Like in the US, we come together in a parade and memorial service with our Returned Servicemens (and Womens) League, and every year the number of those who fought in wars goneby slowly dwindles, but interestly enough I saw lots of young poeple marching around Australia today in place of their forebears - wearing medals on the right side of the breast. Then all the ex and current servicemen get together and have a big booze-up and play two-up with coins and everyone gets teary eyed recalling all the old stories. It's a real day for rememberance and comradery for soldiers and a "thanks giving" day for our nation ( and New Zealand). Oh yes, and lots of Aussies go and have a memorial celebration at the sports ground also, like the big ANZAC day AFL match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

We have Remembrance day on 11/11 here (when the armiciste was signed), but have a peaceful ANZAC day. Thanks for your contributions in WWI and WWII.

P.S. You should put NZ in the first post as well, not just Australia.
