Douglas Adams had the best one. An alien species of beaureaucrats send a ship to blow the Earth, which is actually a giant computer, apart five minutes before it expalins Life, the Universe, and Everything. It was ostensibly destroyed to make room for an interstellar bypass.

If you haven't read it in a while The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is still a classic.

Guys, guys... you are obviously misreading the intention of the OP here. He wants funny ways to destroy the Earth, not simply render it sterile or make life unpleasant for Homo Sapiens.

Take for instance grey goo. Sure, you've converted all available mass into copies of the goo, but the planet is still physically there. And, heck, depending on how resistant the goo is to temperature and pressure, the goo layer probably only extends down a few miles, below which the fundamental structure of the planet is unaltered.

Now, if you were to engineer your goo with tiny rockets and enough reaction mass to reach escape velocity, then you could do something like destroy the Earth.

Or, there's always my personal favorite method - crash a gas giant into it.

Have a huge global nuclear war because some an old man with a beard who lives on a cloud told you to kill the followers of another more arabic-looking old man on a cloud, and both old men are telling you the other doesn't exist but to kill all the other guys just in case... On one side there are virgins up there with the old guy so I guess we all know jealousy is a factor...
