Greetings fellow Conquer-Club'ers. Today, you've encountered a revolutionary opportunity to embark on the glorious endeavor in search of the World Cup!

All 175 of our warriors shall embark with energy and zest at the "lowly" local level, but only a handful from each division shall pass the strenuous tests of 1v1 play.

Endure the tooth-and-nail combat at the regional and continent level in 4-5 player Standard games, before emerging victorious and prepared for the World Cup final!

Only then will you have the power to meet with foes qualifying from around the world, on a global scale truly worthy of the motto of the game we so enjoy. Only then can you vanquish all competition in the traditional 6-player Classic final and claim the Cup!

Welcome to the 2012 World Cup of Risk!

Please first see if you meet these requirements to play:
This tournament is expected to run from late June to mid-December.

[spoiler=Requirements to Play]
  • All premium players will be accepted unless you are banned due to poor sportsmanship in another tournament of mine.
  • If you are a non-premium player, you must have completed at least 200 games and have an Attendance of at least 98% turns taken, as stated on your profile page. You may also be banned due to poor sportsmanship in another tournament of mine.

    This is a fluid requirement, meaning that personal exceptions can be made, at my discretion, if a player has conducted himself well in previous tournaments, or if a player is just shy of the attendance or games requirements. In general, however, these exceptions are rare.
  • Any form of violation of the Rules of Conquer Club found at http://www.conquerclub.com/public.php?mode=rules (including any approved withstanding rules, decisions, or judgments from the Multi Hunters and/or Cheating/Abuse Team) including, but not limited to, creating "multiple accounts", engaging in "secret diplomacy", "throwing games", and/or taking part in any form of collusion or actions taken to provide an unfair advantage to oneself, and/or to any other player in the tournament, that is against the spirit of sportsmanship may result in expulsion from the tournament. The organizer has full judgment in making these decisions and may employ assistance from the Multi Hunters or Cheating/Abuse Team in assessing a situation in which there is suspicion of cheating or rule violations.

[spoiler=Note to Tournament Directors]I have made a Plan B in the event I cannot get 175 signups; this involves having 144 players and divisions of 4 players each, rather than 5 players. The reason this plan was not chosen in the first place is because, as you will see later, third-placed players advance, and having 3 of 4 players advance from a division is entirely ludicrous in my opinion.[/spoiler]

The tournament organiser has the final say on all issues connected to tournament and gameplay.

There are 175 players. All 175 players select one division of their choice when signing up. Players are placed into divisions on a first-come-first serve basis. In other words, the player to first signup will be placed in that division first. There are five players in each division.

Tournament play begins with Division play.

Division Play

In Divisional Play, players play games with the appropriate tournament settings, on the map corresponding to the name of the division (for instance: the NYC division plays games on the NYC map).

[spoiler=Format of Round-Robin]Every player plays every other player in their division once.

The order of how players are listed in their division (before play begins) will be random (#1 through #5), and players will face off in this fashion:

Round 1:
#1 player vs. #4 player
#2 player vs. #3 player
#5 player does not play this round.

Round 2:
#1 player vs. #3 player
#4 player vs. #5 player
#2 player does not play this round.

Round 3:
#1 player vs. #2 player
#3 player vs. #5 player
#4 player does not play this round.

Round 4:
#2 player vs. #5 player
#3 player vs. #4 player
#1 player does not play this round.

Round 5:
#1 player vs. #5 player
#2 player vs. #4 player
#3 player does not play this round.

Invites will be sent for one round at a time to each player. Once all games in a round finish, the next round shall be sent.[/spoiler]

Players are ranked in the standings according to the number of wins they have.
Based on the division, either the player with the most wins or the two players with the most wins will advance. See the above "Visual Representation of Tournament Structure" to determine how many players advance from your division.

Third-Placed Players: Wildcard Games
[spoiler=Wildcard Games]To avoid 3-player games during Conference play, additional players are needed to advance.

After all five rounds of division play, each of the third-placed players (according to number of wins) from each division within a conference are seeded.

Players are seeded from #1 seed to #N seed, where N is the number of third-placed players in the conference (Example: 6 divisions in the USA Conference: third-placed players are seeded from #1 to #6).

The #1 seed will have the most wins among the third-placed players, while the #N seed will have the fewest wins among the third-placed players. The #2 seed will have the second-most wins, while the #(N-1) seed will have the second-fewest wins among the third-placed players, etc.

If players have the same number of wins, I will use random.org to randomly assign the drawn players their seeds. Thus, if two third-placed players both have four wins and will be either the #2 seed or #3 seed, I will use random.org to determine which player will be #2 seed and which will be #3 seed.

In a conference with 2 divisions

The #1 seed will play the #2 seed in 1, 2-player game on the corresponding conference map (for instance, in the Balkan conference, the third-placed players from the Macedonia and Yugoslavia divisions will play a 2-player game on the Balkan map).

In a conference with 4 divisions

The #1 seed will play the #4 seed in 1, 2-player game on the corresponding conference map.
The #2 seed will play the #3 seed in 1, 2-player game on the corresponding conference map.

In a conference with 6 divisions

The #1 seed will play the #6 seed in 1, 2-player game on the corresponding conference map.
The #2 seed will play the #5 seed in 1, 2-player game on the corresponding conference map.
The #3 seed will play the #4 seed in 1, 2-player game on the corresponding conference map.

The winners of these 2-player games will advance from divisional play to conference play, in addition to the first and second-placed players advancing from divisional play.[/spoiler]

[spoiler=Tie-Breaker Policy]Should multiple players have the same number of wins at the end of Round 5, the ranking of each player will be determined as follows:

The player with the greatest number of wins, considering only those games in which the drawn players played against each other ("head-to-head" matches), is ranked highest. The player with the fewest wins, considering only those games in which the drawn players played against each other, is ranked lowest.

Should the drawn players still have an equal number of wins, considering only those games in which the drawn players played against each other ("head-to-head" matches), then those drawn players will play a Standard game with the appropriate settings on the division map. The winner of this standard game is ranked highest, and the player first eliminated is ranked lowest. The player eliminated second is ranked next lowest, etc.

Example
In a group, the following results emerged after Round 5:

Andrea: 4 wins
Bastian: 2 wins
David: 2 wins
Franck: 2 wins
Wayne: 1 win

Andrea has secured first place, but to determine which players are in second and third place, tie-breaker policy is used.

Concerning ONLY the games between Bastian, David, and Franck:

Bastian defeated David and Franck: 2 wins
David lost to Bastian, but defeated Franck: 1 win
Franck lost to Bastian and David: 0 wins

Thus, Bastian is ranked highest (second place), David earns third place, and Franck is ranked lowest (fourth place).

If there were a tie in the number of wins among all three players, they would then play a 3-player Standard game.[/spoiler]

Conference Play

First, determine which division you have selected, and whether advancing from this division will lead to conference play. If not (and advancing leads you directly to the League Final), then don't bother reading this section! In your case then, only the first-placed player will advance, but he has then the advantage of advancing directly to the League Final 8-[

[spoiler=For Conference with 2 Divisions]Example: BeNeLux Conference
5 players play, 2 players advance.

A total of five players have advanced from division play (two first-placed players, two second-placed players, and one third-placed player).

These five players play in 1, 5-player Standard game with the appropriate settings on the map corresponding to the name of the Conference (as per our example: on the BeNeLux map).

The winner advances to the League Final.

The remaining four players play in 1, 4-player Standard game on the same map with the same settings.

The winner advances to the League Final.[/spoiler]

[spoiler=For Conference with 4 Divisions]Example: Canada Conference
10 players play, 4 players advance.

A total of ten players have advanced from division play (four first-placed players, four second-placed players, and two third-placed players).

These five players are randomly divided (using random.org) into 2, 5-player Standard games with the appropriate settings on the map corresponding to the name of the Conference (as per our example: on the Canada map).

The winner of each game advances to the League Final. Thus, two players advance to the League Finals.

The remaining eight players are randomly divided into 2, 4-player Standard game on the same map with the same settings.

15 players play, 6 players advance.

A total of fifteen players have advanced from division play (six first-placed players, six second-placed players, and three third-placed players).

These fifteen players are randomly divided (using random.org) into 3, 5-player Standard games with the appropriate settings on the map corresponding to the name of the Conference (as per our example: on the USA map).

The winner of each game advances to the League Final. Thus, three players advance to the League Finals.

The remaining twelve players are randomly divided into 3, 4-player Standard game on the same map with the same settings.

The winner of each game advances to the League Final. Thus, three additional players advance to the League Finals.[/spoiler]

League Play

[spoiler=North American and European League Finals]Both leagues follow the exact format, just on different maps.

10 players play, 4 players advance.

Ten players have advanced from Conference play.

The ten players are randomly divided (using random.org) into 2, 5-player Standard games with the appropriate settings on the map corresponding to the name of the League (North America for North American league, Europe for European league).

The winner of each game advances to the World Cup Qualifiers. Thus, two players advance to the World Cup Qualifiers.

The remaining eight players are randomly divided into 2, 4-player Standard game on the same map with the same settings.

The winner of each game advances to the World Cup Qualifiers. Thus, an additional two players advance to the World Cup Qualifiers.[/spoiler]

[spoiler=South American, African, and Asian League Finals]All three leagues follow the exact format, just on different maps.

5 players play, 2 players advance.

Five players have advanced into the League Final.

The five players play 1, 5-player Standard games with the appropriate settings on the map corresponding to the name of the League.

The winner of the game advances to the World Cup Qualifiers.

The remaining four players play 1, 4-player Standard game on the same map with the same settings.

The winner of the game advances to the World Cup Qualifiers.[/spoiler]

World Cup Qualifiers

[spoiler=Round 1]Fourteen players have advanced into the World Cup Qualifiers.

The fourteen players are randomly divided (using random.org) into 2, 7-player Standard games with the appropriate settings on the Classic map.

The winner of each game advances to the World Cup Final![/spoiler]

[spoiler=Round 2]The remaining twelve players are randomly divided into 2, 6-player Standard games with the appropriate settings on the Classic map.

The winner of each game advances to the World Cup Final![/spoiler]

The World Cup Final

[spoiler=World Cup Final]Six players have advanced into the World Cup Final. The 6 players play 1, 6-player Standard game with the appropriate settings on the Classic map.

The winner of the game is crowned champion of the 2012 World Cup of Risk! =D> =D> =D>[/spoiler]

Policies for Players Failing to Join Games

The organiser has full judgment in each case of a player not joining games.

Each player is guaranteed a minimum of three invites to each game. The organiser may choose to send additional invites to a player, at his discretion. The organiser shall begin sending messages to a player that has not yet joined a game after receiving two invites. If the player does not join his game after three invites (or, otherwise, after a number of invites as decided by the organiser), then further action is taken:

[spoiler=For Division Play]In Division Play, Round 1
The player failing to join a game is replaced by the player at the top of the Reserves list.

In Division Play, Rounds Other Than Round 1

The player failing to join a game is removed from the group.

  • In all games that player played or was scheduled to play, his opponent will receive a win by forfeit.
  • This clause applies regardless of whether the player still has opponents to face and games to play; all four of the other players in the group are credited with a win in their game against that player.

Example:

Landon failed to accept invites in Round 3 of Division Play. The organiser removes him from the tournament.

Landon defeated Cristiano in Round 1.
Landon lost to Robbie in Round 2.

Cristiano is credited for a win, and so is Robbie, even though Cristiano lost to Landon at the time in that game.

Landon's future opponents of Round 3 and Round 4, Lionel and Giovani, are also credited with a win, even though they never will play Landon.

Thus this is a very simple policy. Each player gets the win and therefore, the group is essentially reduced to a 4-player group as a result of one player having 0 wins.[/spoiler]

[spoiler=For Conference Play]Conference Play

If a player fails to join a Conference game, the third-placed players from Division Play (considering only those divisions from which players advanced into the Conference) that did not advance to Conference play will play 1, Standard game on the map corresponding to the name of the Conference. The winner of this game will advance to Conference play in place of the player failing to join the game.

For conferences with only two divisions, then the one, third-placed player who failed to advance will advance to Conference play in place of the player failing to join the game.[/spoiler]

[spoiler=For League Finals]League Finals

If a player fails to join a League Finals game, all of the players who advanced to Conference play but failed to advance to the League Finals will be divided into two, equal-sized Standard games, and play on the map corresponding to the name of the league, with the appropriate settings.

The winners of those two Standard games will play a 2-player game on the map corresponding to the name of the league. The winner of that game will advance to the League Finals in place of the player who failed to join the game.[/spoiler]

[spoiler=For World Cup Qualifiers]World Cup Qualifiers

If a player fails to join a World Cup Qualifiers game, the 21 players who advanced to the League Finals but failed to advance to the World Cup Qualifiers will be divided into three, 7-player Standard games, and play on the Classic map, with the appropriate settings.

The winners of those three Standard games will play a 3-player game on the Classic map. The winner of this game will advance to the World Cup Qualifiers in place of the player who failed to join the game.[/spoiler]

[spoiler=For the World Cup Final]World Cup Final

If a player fails to join the World Cup Final, the 8 players who advanced to the World Cup Qualifiers but failed to advance to the World Cup Final will play 1, 8-player Standard game, on the Classic map, with the appropriate settings.

The winner of the game will advance to the World Cup Final in place of the player who failed to join the World Cup Final.[/spoiler]
If a player, in the organizer's opinion, intentionally fails to join, or by the Rules of Conquer Club, "throws" a Division game due to the player's knowledge or belief that he cannot advance from his division, this player will be banned from future tournaments due to unsportsmanlike behavior.

In any of the above instances, the organizer holds full judgment.
