would you get married for 1,000 years

Post by saxitoxin »

If you, and your wife to-be, were going to live to 1,000 years old, would you still get married?

Do people get married because they know it's only a 40 year or so commitment?

I'd get married, but i'd accept the fact it would almost certainly not be "til death do us part". In fact i'd remove that particular point from the vows.

I was married for around a thousand years. From the age of 22 to the age of 26. then we divorced, and I found the right woman.

does her body age (like jay's previous post)? if so then no way because she'll end up being disgusting.

If no, then maybe...it depends on the girl.

If bodies age you won't live till a thousand.

Also, your body would be as equally disgusting as hers, so it's not like you'd be getting any from anybody, if even her.

A thousand years with the same person, no matter who that person is, would get incredibly old and boring. I don't care if it's Jessica Alba, after the 20,000th time of hitting that, it wouldn't be fun anymore.

Why not post a picture of what you would look like in a thousand years? She might be the best you can get.

Well it depends on what parts of the bodies are subject to aging (skin sagging, etc.). And I'd rather be alone that have to be around a 1000 year old body.

I don't think that people necessarily get married because they know it won't last indefinitely.
Though given enough time, people do change. In that change, a couple can grow apart. Assuming a couple lives eternal lives, they're going to separate eventually.
In regards to the 1000 years bit, I wouldn't. I can't picture myself caring much about a lack of freedom of choice. Sure, you may appreciate consistent company, but I can't imagine someone not desiring new frontiers or feeling held back from doing what they want. I think because life is so short that we value the company. If mortality wasn't a thing I doubt there would be any commitment. Why bother? You'll always be around and so will they.

Haha... I somewhat contradicted myself there... Let me rephrase this. No, I don't think people get married because they know it is a 'short' commitment, but because...
Eh... I'm tiredasfuck so I'll get back to this tomorrow perhaps.
Renewed yet infused with apathy.
Let's just have a good time, all right?

What would it be like to have a constant friend for 100 years? Then scale that up to 1000 years.

Now, trying to answer that, we'd get closer to being able to answer OP's question.

I think my questions dodge the main issue. If people could live 1000 years, most of them would probably form into a network of friends, and then dominate the world, or the politics of some locale. If you had 1000 years of knowledge, wisdom, and presumably many networks of friends, you'd be well-placed for controlling your local environment.

Only if marrying was the only way to actually live 1000 years.

I would, My girlfriend is the most fantastic person I know. we've been going out for about 8 month and everything still feel exciting. we get along really well cus we're have similar personalities (immature lol) but we are both different in that she loves the country and I'm more of a city person.

I wouldn't say that my girlfriend holds me back from anything, she's encouraging and willing to do things I like.

It just takes the right person..... and the amazing sex is a plus :)

if you believe gerontologist and beard-fancier Aubrey de Grey, the first person to live to 1,000 has already been born. It could be YOU.

Wouldn't living that long cause us to reevaluate all decisions, particularly ones with an element of risk?
Crossing the road, for example - there is always a risk of death, but right now i'm balancing that tiny risk against a best-case scenario of another 50 years of life. If i had another 950 to go i might be a lot more precious about it. Likewise about who I married.

Yes of course I'd still marry you, dear. Now stop reading over my shoulder, that's incredibly irritating. Ow! Jesus! Well FÙCK YOU TOO, SWEETHEART. (continues ad infinitum)

Maybe I'm a hopeless romantic, but that sounds just fine with me. Also it would be fascinating to see the course of world events unfold.

wait, are we COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY immortal? Like, can we still be killed by accidents and whatnot?

If not, then I would probably go for it. Imagine how much money you'd be able to make being immortal and then you can pay high quality escorts to f*ck you for many years.

I wouldn't buy it. Mostly because a 300 year old couldn't sport such a rockin' hat.
