I happen to think that re-introducing national service would be a good thing, for individuals and for society as a whole, provided that conscientious objectors could serve their time in the lifeboat, fire or mountain rescue services or in the police force.
i think the thing that pisses me off the most is that deserters & conciencious objectors a presidential pardon. now that sucks.
who give someone the right to come back to the US if they don't have the stones to protect it.
i had a guy that i was teaching once & he was saying and bragging that during Vietnam he disappeared from boot camp during wartime & went to live in Canada.
well, that was the end of any instruction he recieved from me.
couldn't handle his weight & got gone. my bad...go back to Canada dude.

Sounds like a good way to introduce corrupt cops. I really don't think we should just send anyone to jobs like that.
I refuse to join any armed force because killing another human being is morally wrong.
I'll send money to the troops directly if it gets them the gear they need to survive, but that's as far as it goes.
Though I did consider joining the Navy at one time. I even took the Navy Nuclear Power Exam and passed it. I got that under my belt. Shortly afterward, I changed my mind however and didn't go.
*shrugs* Besides, I'm not a military-minded guy. When someone tells me to do something, I want the freedom to ask what the motive is behind the command.
As toward the US policy in Iraq, Harry Reid got it half-right. The war is a lost cause, but it's not because of something the soldiers did or didn't do. The reason the whole thing is a mindless charade now is because of mismanagement by the Bush administration and the paranoid delusions of this supposed war on terror. That's all I have to say about the subject.

... I knew a guy when I was in, he just couldn't take it. He even faked a "suicide attempt" (that usually works, actually), but the fool took a bottle of Bufferin aspirin! Haha. He was actually a pretty good friend of mine, so I got nothing bad to say about him...
... So that suicide attempt didn't get him booted, so he came up with a master plan. He ate, and ate and ate! This guy got so fat, so fast... Got a medical discharge after about 6 months of eating, because he "couldn't lose a pound".
... Then, this guy gets on a bicycle, and cycles home to Denver (from Florida). He called me, said he lost most of the weight he put on during his quest to get booted. "Mission Accomplished!"
... I felt glad for him only because he was a friend, but that discharge is going to follow him for the rest of his life.

True, but I'm sure if this was implemented then they'd have their own checks and standards in place. With my previous form I'd probably only be allowed to do mountains, lifeguard or military. ...and lifeguard & military would be stretching it
I really don't think I could kill another human being, and therfore have no intention of joining. I would however defend my country if anyone attempts to invaid etc. And im sure many will agree that there is a big difference between being shipped off to die for some obscure reason and actually defending ones motherland.

some people are just plain scum.
Well, then your friend is better off then. I'd rather lose a friend like you than bend over backwards to appease them.
Maybe when you lose a friend in a mindless military accident rather than in combat, you'll get it.

I would never join the army UNLESS the US were to be invaded or attacked. I might consider national guard, but probably not. Its pretty much a death wish, with all of the roadside bombs and all. I may sound selfish, but its true. You may be helping your country, but is Iraq the real enemy? i dont want to be shipped off to a place that doesnt have the intention to attack the US.
GWB did serve in the Vietnam era. He was in the National Guard as a fighter pilot.
He did not dodge any draft.
If you chose not to serve, that's your prerogative. It's those that would "bad mouth" the military or would turn tail and run at the first sign of conflict I have little (if any) respect for.
Damn, what is with a few of you guys bashing our troops? you might not agree with why were fighting, hell some troops dont agree with what theyre doing, but dont EVER EVER EVER bash them. Theyre risking their lives to protect your ass now show them some fucking respect and support them. To answer your question, no i have no plans on joining the military, but if a draft was implemented then i would go without question. Thats your duty as a US citizen. if asked to serve your country you have to its in the constituition, so really if you bitch out and run up to canada you shouldnt be allowed back in the US because you didnt fill your end of the bargain.

thank YOU! im am so glad that there are plenty of people in this world who actually SUPPORT our troops instead of putting them down! if one doesnt agree with the reason we're out there then thats fine but they shouldnt add a negative reputation to soldiers and marines and pilots and saiolors who are out there risking they're lives every day.

WHy? I'm not going to bash the military, but why should we go. I mean I would run away to Canada is I was drafted. I have my reasons.

you fucking asshole...the troops don't ask to be deployed where they are...thats the president and congress's choice...all they want to do is serve and protect their country, which is one of the most honorable things you can do....to say 'f*ck you' to the troops because of where they are fighting when they don't control it shows just how fucking stupid and idiotic you are
