jenos, this is fairly ridiculous. Go and listen to the blue scholars. Almost any of their songs refute all of what you are saying. Mainstream rap is what it is because people don't like thinking when they watch tv. It's too time consuming and difficult. What people like is watching near-naked women, and having their baser emotions played out onscreen (greed, gluttony, violence, misogyny, etc.) And to be fair, rap addresses a lot more issues than rock, or at least more frequently. Don't get me wrong, I love the who and some of those guys, but when was the last time you heard a rock group performing social analysis and commentary in anything other than these weird broad platitudes?(see green day's last album, where they went from stoners to crazy revolutionaries. American idiot, that's it. As far as I can tell, most of the people here championing rap have listened to rock. Go listen to "commencement day" by the blue scholars, see what you think. Give the other side a chance hey?

Nigga?
Who is you calling a nigga?
Man, I am pissed now. You is about to get fucked up by my pimp-cane mothafucka. Word one two one two one two. Gimmie a beat!

<Beatboxing noises>

Mr Incrediball is super sucky,
He can't get bitches and he never gets lucky,
He's got no bling and he's got no ice,
all he can afford to eat is rice,
I'm gonna drive by his house, and molest his mum,
She'll love every minute then she'll drink some rum,
From the Eastside and throwing up gang-signs,
I hate crips, and despise mimes,
their annoying, stupid, silent, acting crap,
makes me fetch my AK and go ratta-tat,
Gonna dig up the bones of Incred's Ancestors,
Sell them to greedy financial investors (child molestors? I couldn't decide),
What you got bitch, you gonna rap back?
You've got a keg but I've got a six-pack!
You got no rhymes and you got no rhythmn,
You ain't done crime and you ain't been to prison,
Lets start the ultimate MC Battle,
I'm gonna own you and your mindless prattle.

That's word from the Genius one time! Representing for Compton my whole mothafucking life!

The biggest problem with rap is, and this is just a generality, not an all-encompassing statement, that Rappers tend to make their music about the darker sides of life - living poor, crime, violence, ecetera ecetera. Yet, once a rapper becomes more famous, he no longer has to worry about such things. This paradox is an amusingly ironic paradox which is, in the end, going to be the downfall of rap.
Due to tradition: back in the 70s when rappers would rap about these topics because they never knew and would never know any other life besides this, rappers nowadays tend to rap about the same topics, when they really shouldn't.
At the same time, rapper's images are another think that retract from what their goal is: making music. Dancing Mustard and Mr. Incrediball perfectly exemplify the idiotic language associated with rappers which annoy the fucking hell out of me.
Its my belief that, due to those two reasons, Rap is on the downswing. Sales of rap cds went down 21% from 2005-2006. "Sales of Rap Albums Take Stunning Nosedive - Maybe it was the umpteenth coke-dealing anthem or soft-porn music video. Perhaps it was the preening antics that some call reminiscent of Stepin Fetchit." (Associated Press 3/1/07)

Now to delve into my personal opinion. Rap is terrible because it's music lacks diversity. Unlike other genres of music, where there are variety of musical tracks and riffs, rap uses a drum beat and synthesizer and a DJ. While the novelty of outcome of these three items sounds cool for awhile, it gets repetitive and eventually obnoxious. Rap is, more or less, a glorified poem dramatically spoken to this music. Most of the creativeness in rap music comes from these drum beats, synthesizer, and DJs desperately trying to find a new pattern of their music. If not, then they copy riffs from other musicians (Ice T's Ice Ice Baby and Queen and Nas' I Can and Beethoven as just two of copious amounts of examples)
While I will concede that rap's lyrics are about more topics than stereotypes give them credit for, the way most rappers talk annoy me.

That is why rap is bad.

You're an idiot.

I like Rap and Rock because they both take great deals of talent. I just think mainstream rap and hip-hop take not too much. They repeat the same thing over and OVER.

Given that an 'unground' rapper told me flat-out that rap isn't music, I'll be content to leave it at that. If you don't like rock or metal, that's YOUR problem. I'll leave you alone if you agree to stay off any threads on rock/metal. Deal?

I finish with this, one of the most beautiful songs ever written. And it is metal all the way. If you ever get the chance, watch the music video.

Social Commentry? Look up the Lyrics for Peace Sells! Or any other song by Megadeth, or Nirvana for that matter. I await your angry rebuttals with great anticipation  .

Do I want the debate to end? YES! Will it end? Not as long as there are lameasses who think my music is beneath their noise. So it shall remain until an agreement is made.

I don't think you understood that "underground" rapper correctly - I strongly doubt he meant his form of personal expression "sucks. period." maybe he was trying to accentuate the poetic (non-musical) aspects of his work, differentiate between what he does and others - I don't want to put words in the guy's mouth. But it just really pisses me off when people say "rap" (or any broad, all encompassing spectrum, like specific religions) suck, are racist, misogynistic, etc. PERIOD.

Oh, and I feel we're missing how moronic most musical lyrics sound when you take it out of the music. For ex., I love Manowar, but the lyrics? If you just wrote the lyrics down and said, "hey, this stuff sucks, look how dumb the lyrics are", you'd agree. So just... shut up, and this thread is wrong. Not saying rap is better or worse than anything else, but it doesn't suck / is a bad influence as much as a lot of people think. PERIOD.

Did I say your fucking music was beneath my noise? No. Ignore everyone else, it was me you had a problem with originally and my definition of hip-hop. I've provided a detailed post arguing the merits and provided examples of lyrics which go completely against your ignorant and ridiculous stereotype. Whatever rapper you talked to was either making a point you entirely missed else is just plain wrong... How does your one 'underground rapper' compare with the hundreds of people I'm involved with in the hip-hop scene? Rappers, poets, producers, DJ's, breakers, graff artists...

If you wanna see some of the qualities rap can have look at someone like Saul Williams. He's an internationally celebrated rapper and poet, and he's recorded with Hip-Hop greats like the Fugees, KRS One and De La Soul... But he's also toured with Nine Inch Nails and his latest album was produced by Trent Reznor... Now if one of Rock's greatest talents can open his eyes and cross genres why the f*ck can't you you closed minded twat?

I've never judged rock music in this thread, far from it - I enjoy a varied amount of music and have been in bands and involved in that scene for years... But I'm also fully committed to Hip-Hop as an art form and a lifestyle.

You've ignored every valid post and argument in this thread and instead focussed on Dancing Mustard's rather lame lampooning (which, unless you speak like that in real life, is getting a little insulting I'm afraid). Why not actually try and wedge open those cemented-shut-by-prejudice eyes and actually look at the world. Music is Music. Now shut the f*ck up.
