People in the US foreign policy media generally consider that issue to be the next flash point by China--including China's tensions over the other islands claimed by Vietnam, Taiwan, and/or Philippines. A good portion of foreign policy analysts (e.g. Daniel Drezner) think that the USG is overreacting, which exacerbates the tension between China and the US with its allies. Other FP analysts who support the current US approach talk about the dangers of appeasement. Aside from the rhetoric, no one really knows what the USG thinks because that information is classified. The uncertainty prevents either side of the outsiders from getting a better glimpse at the truth, so the soundness of either stance is unknown.mrswdk wrote:When talking to my family back home I get the impression that most people are barely even aware of the dispute between China and Japan over the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands, much less any of the details.
Just wondered: has this been treated as any kind of big deal in any of the Western media? Do you guys know many details about what's been happening?
Ask a Japanese person the same thing, and you get the Japanese version. Just my 2 cents._sabotage_ wrote:My wife says:
They are Chinese, they belong to China.
Why?
Because China owned them for so many years.
Are they worth going to war for?
Yeah. They're strategically a must to prevent US bases from getting any closer.
Well now I know my opinion!DoomYoshi wrote:i support opium war

Do you think that China is not at all motivated by the claims on resources surrounding those rocks and reefs?_sabotage_ wrote:The US has China pretty much surrounded as is, whereas the islands don't really increase Japan's defenses. So for the Chinese, it is defensive and for the US, via the Japanese, it is offensive.
Just saw Maos message. Is it based on ignorance or apathy?
Ah, thanks. So will you stop the 'China's acting defensively' shtick?_sabotage_ wrote:Land is the foundation of the state according to Sun Tzu, this has not been forgotten.
1. China is expanding defensively (lol) to protect itself._sabotage_ wrote:If it's their land, and they are using it to their defense, how are the ideas incompatible?
Okay, so where do you stand on this issue (minus the specks and logs for clarity's sake)?_sabotage_ wrote:I'm not defensive of China, I just believe that if your neighbour has a speck in their eye, then wait until you have removed the log from your own before trying to help them.
I would defend anyone in a similar fashion.
