I would like to hear your response to this:

Neutrino wrote:Just an idle question that no-one has ever answered for me:

Why do Christians, and in fact, every religion consider themselves the correct religion? I mean, you're convinced that you are correct, but so are all the Muslims and Jews and Hindus and all the various other religions.
As far as I can tell, no religion offers a huge amount of proof for its own correctness above that of its competition, so how do you know that you follow the correct religion?

Very good question. There are many religions out there, isn't there? And they all pretty much claim to have "the way" to God. So, which one is correct? I think most of us can agree that all of them can not be correct. (Unless you can picture Jesus, Allah, Buddha, Zeus, Spaghetti Monster etc. etc. etc. all sitting around Heaven waiting for their specific followers)

Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father but through me." And I believe this 100%. It's basically faith. And I can't speak for other faiths... only mine. When I first became a Christian I believed Jesus was who He claimed to be. In time, as my faith grew, God revealed to me things that confirmed my faith. So much so, that I now know (not just believe) that Jesus is who He said He is.

I guess you could study all faiths to find the "right" one. I, as well as countless others have come to the knowledge that Jesus is the only way to God.

Take a step in faith.....

I agree 100%. All are incorrect.

It's basically "Choose your ancient delusion".

jay_a2j wrote:In time, as my faith grew, God revealed to me things that confirmed my faith. So much so, that I now know (not just believe) that Jesus is who He said He is.

You saw what you wanted to see to self-confirm your beliefs. "If god wants us to have a baby, we will get pregnant."....<time passes>...."What?!! Your pregnant? It was the lords work!", etc.

jay_a2j wrote:I guess you could study all faiths to find the "right" one.

Or set yourself free from superstition and start living unencumbered by rituals and fairy tales.

jay_a2j wrote:I, as well as countless others have come to the knowledge that Jesus is the only way to God.

I and countless others have come to the realization that gods, fairies, demons, angels, boogiemen, devils, etc are the invention of man. Just as we laugh at the ancient peoples who worshiped the sun, stars, and weather, so will our ancestors one day look back and laugh at us. Funny how NONE of the gods/devils that all the religions of the world claim to exist have ever appeared and shown themselves to ANYONE....EVER. (unless you count the circumstantial example given above or the extremely shaky "no witnesses" accounts in various ancient religious texts .)

jay_a2j wrote:Take a step in faith.....

Or, take a step into reality and stop wishing invisible gods/devils exist.

Jesus has appeared to men and will again. And Scripture accounts for a lot of "witnesses" of Jesus.

Question: If God was visible for all to see, maybe an immense unbearable light in the sky with His voice audibly heard by all... would you then worship Him?

No. I refuse to worship somebody who seems himself as a god, and wants me to follow all these rules that I don't agree with. Your "God" needs to learn a bit of modesty.

I don't doubt that a man named jesus existed and was no doubt a powerful, charismatic person. But he was a man...not a god, or son thereof.

Question: If Zeus was visible for all to see, maybe an immense face in the sky with a voice audibly heard by all... would you then worship him?

Question: If the flying spaghetti monster was visible for all to see, maybe an immense unbearable light in the sky with a voice audibly heard by all... would you then worship him?

As long as we are fantasizing, if ANY magical beings appeared in the sky with a voice heard planetwide, they yes. We ALL would change our opinions of religion(s). If any of the gods that humans proclaim to exist want worshipers (that IS what gods want, right?) than they could instantly have a planet full if they were to do just what you describe.

Yet, they don't. And why not? It would be a snap of the finger for a god to do this. Why the cloak and dagger? Why the mystery? Answer: They are inventions by superstitious humans to explain away the unknown.

I am sure you have a biblical quote now describing when this actually happened. The bible of the Flying Spaghetti Monster has one also. ;)

I can SO picture that.

And luns, I distinctly remember using the words "anal sex" when mentioning ONE alternative factor than simply being homosexual as putting a person at greater risk for transmitting HIV. Maybe you missed that, although you DID quote it and even asked me what I think "they're doing", and mentioned "holding hands", probably to add a slightly humorous touch. To be fair, I'll admit that I should have said "unprotected anal sex" to make it absolutely clear.

So you don't agree with my definition of "tolerant" as meaning that a person accepts alternatives to his opinions/lifestyle/whatever as equal and valid. Note that I'm not saying you have to agree with it, just accept it as equal and valid. Well, what is your definition? Obviously you think you have a better one, so please, share it with the rest of us.

EXACTLY. Well said BG. It is INCREDIBLY convenient that christianity, as the example here, claims the existence of a being more powerful than you can possibly imagine (did i just paraphrase star wars?) and yet built into the whole thing is the idea that he will not offer one iota of proof that he exists.
And while I am ranting, I find the whole 'god spoke to me/healed me etc etc' stuff, i am sorry to say, self-serving and almost obscene when there are millions dying each year from malaria and other natural disasters and yet god is apparently not on hand to help them out or stop them dying painful and arbitrary deaths.

Witnesses: King Herod, we found his tomb not long ago.
Pontius Piliate, recorded in roman records and in scripture as governor of Judea. At the moment, I can recall little else.

And those who, for want of a better term, believe that all beliefs are false, such people will write off any such event as mass hallucination, regardless of what they saw. It wouldn't matter, because the answer is, to them, not logical.

Oh well you have certainly convinced me now. I have an ancient document written by Abuzab Minumuraki that says he staged it all. ;)

Here's the thing:

GODS would not mess around in the shadows wishing and hoping people loved them. That is just a convenient excuse to explain away the obvious absence of said gods. Why is it that we haven't had a mass visit from a god in a few thousand years? Why are the only witnesses of mass visits 2000 years old?

As for writing it off as Mass Hysteria... If it really were a god(s) giving a message to the planet THERE WOULD BE NO DOUBT as EVERYONE on the planet would get the message at once, complete with a smiting or two and lightning bolts for good effect. There would be no doubt in anyones mind, no claims of mass hysteria because, after all...it would be the obvious work of gods. BOOM. Instant planet of followers, all other religions disappear overnight and christianity reigns supreme.

But this will never happen. Instead we get happenstance attributed as miracle and blurry random images in grilled cheese being worshiped as a "sign".

These are not the actions of gods.

There was no "proof" when I first believed (at least none that I was aware of) yet I chose to. Ya gotta have faith. (Don't start singing the George Michael song now... )

Wha...?
Do you actually know who Zeus is? Barrel chested guy, throws lightning. Chief god of the ancient Greeks. Wife was Hera. Slept with a lot of mortals and created a race of freaks.

To the best of my knowledge, the Christian god does not have a wife, is not barrel chested, did not throw lightning and did not father a race of freaks (humanity is not included here).

Therefore, unless you are willing to set aside all the 'established facts' about god, he is not Zeus.

Same goes with the Spaghetti Monster.

P.S. Put [/quote] at the end of every piece of text you are rebutting, then Copy and Paste the quoting instruction text at the beginning of the next piece.

Its not very hard, and makes your rebuttals a lot more legible.
