Remove the "most improved" leaderboard

Post by betiko »

This leaderboard makes absolutely no sense.

a monthly powerscore leaderboard was created at the same time to give people equal chances.
The "most improved" leaderboard is only for low rankers representing the same concept.. But in an unfair and arbitrary way. It encourages abuses.

-it encourages to pointdrop as much as possible before the next month starts
-it encourages to farm during a month
-it encourages to create a multi account for a fresh start and and a quick rise

I think it's a great idea in theory, kind of like Billboard's Heatseeker award, and it can award new rising stars in the playerbase.

Maybe limit it to players under a certain number of games? Once you pass 500 games or so, you're no longer eligible for "Most Improved"?

The only pro I can think of its new found use of catching abusers. So maybe remove any award and move the board to the C&A forum. Or just move the board to Administrative private forum for them to monitor abusers.

Maybe it should be an alternative scorebaord, that would count from start of each month all players from 1000 points.

I strongly disagree with this, and here is my argument why:

This Scoreboard was invented on 3rd of November, but data can be also checked for October, like for every other month. We can assume that there was no "score manipulation" in October, because on that time nobody had idea that the Scoreboard will come, so we can assume that in October everyone played "honestly". Now, let's compare results of top players from Scoreboard for every month, and see if there are some unusual score deviations after new scoreboard was implemented. In addition, I will also add comparison for "Monthly leaders scoreboard", and i will compare data of 1st, 5th and 10th placed players, the last eligible for each of medals.

Red are results which have decreased in comparison with its equivalent from October, while blue are results which have increased in comparison with its equivalent from October.

In addition to this, do not forget that total number of players was constantly increasing in these months, so more players in latest months by default means there are more chances that results will be higher than in October.

October: {monthly leaders / most improved}
1: 17,588 / 103.7
5: 4,176 / 79.3
10: 3,181 / 61.1

November:
1: 13,428 / 106.8
5: 3,667 / 77.1
10: 3,109 / 58.4

December:
1: 8.602 / 124.4
5: 4.097 / 72.9
10: 2.747 / 60.4

January:
1: 16.998 / 149.3
5: 4.835 / 64.5
10: 3.607 / 61.4

So you see, 12 of considered results are lower while 6 of considered results are higher than it was in October, when we are sure that this kind of point manipulation (which you assume is happening now) did not happen.

Considering solely "Most improved" leader board, there are 5 results lower and 4 results higher than in October.

So, by considering the actual data, it is not confirmed but rather refuted your assumption that now players are manipulating their scores in order to achieve better results on monthly/most improved leader board.

Of course, if there happens some isolated case of a player who is point dumping at the end of a month in order to get the medal in the next month, then the player can be investigated and possibly properly punished by C&A team like Kyaljs now for his the highest improvement ever of 149.3% (underlined in the above consideration because it is under pending investigation).

So, while actual data refuted your argument that players are manipulating this scoreboard as the only negative point about it, why not consider positive points and how this scoreboard is contributing to the site, like for example the fact that it gives to new and unexperienced players chance to earn something worthy while their skill is still lower, by giving them equal chance to compete for the medal versus others whose skill is on similar low level, while more or less excluding strong player from the competition. Isn't it something good for the site and encouraging for new comers to compete for a Super achievement medal? Do you think there is any other super achievement medal that newcomers have a decent chance to earn?

Those newcommers can compete for the monthly powerscore leaderboard. It gives fair chances to everyone. Why should low rankers have more chances to win a super acheivement?
It s not even about being a newcomer but about being a low ranker.

Just because something is being or has been abused does not mean it's a cancer orthat it is without merit. The overall scoreboard and the monthly Powerscore boards have plenty of C and A cases regarding the leaders. Should those go as well? My first month here I made the most improved board and it felt good and got me playing more games, which I believe is the point. That being said perhaps the amount of abuse could be decreased if the conquer credits and medal were removed and it was just for the fun of knowing your the most improved. I don't know. How about we eliminate the entire scoreboard tab ,replace it with the forum tab and then everyone's happy right?

The difference is that anyone can compete for the monthly leaderboard thanks to the powerscore, the most improved leaderboard is only for people with very low score at the begining of a given month.
I don t know, just change it to the "most improved newcommer" then, and only accounts less than 3 month old can participate.

Either that, or make it in comparison with a rolling average score of perhaps the preceding 3 or 6 months. As long as it covers much more than a month's worth of games, it will be much harder to manipulate (and hopefully not worth the effort).

as i said in a separate thread:
most improved should not mean how many points you get in a month but rather by how much you improved your best score. that's improvement. not point dumping, then farming noobs to get back to your previous score.

or make it just for beginners and call it "best newcomer". and only players with less than X games at the beginning of a month are eligible.
so, yeah, something should change here.

Haven't got time to read the thread but both new scoreboards and pointless, meaningless and have just resulted in many members getting banned.

So you would pretty much agree with all of us.
