So the Rhonda fight was pretty good... the bar went crazy when she won. Not quite as crazy as bars used to be in GSP's era, but it was totally full and the fire marshal coulda kicked 3/4 of people out of the place.

I recorded the WSOF and watched it when I came back. I still can't get over Palhares. This is a guy who was suspended 90 days from the UFC for holding a submission too long (after the tap he kept cranking it). Then he was suspended 9 months for using roids. Then he was booted out of the UFC completely for holding a submission too long.

Last night, not only did he come in looking like his arms were inflated balloons but he also gouged his opponents eyes 8 times in plain sight of the useless referee and he held the submission way too long.

Digging around in Shields’ eyes was a new low for Palhares. It was a dirty tactic that demonstrated just how far he’s willing to bend the rules when he feels like he’s in trouble. Even without a larger context, it would have been bad. View it through the lens of his entire career in MMA, and it seems like a character flaw manifested in the dangerous acts of a desperate man.

At the same time, let’s not pretend like we’d be anywhere near this interested in Palhares if he weren’t such a fascinating case study in callous disregard. “We’re going to go back, and we’re going to see what happened in the fight on video – take my time, and take my emotion out (of it),” Abdelaziz told MMAjunkie. “If Palhares really held the submission long and (there were) eye-gouges for sure, there’s going to be some consequences for sure.”

Abdelaziz said one consequence – the Nevada State Athletic Commission withheld Palhares’ win bonus – has already happened. But could there be others, such as stripping him of the belt or even releasing the fighter, who already has a checkered past with holding submissions too long?

“I don’t know,” said Abdelaziz, who signed Palhares after the UFC cut ties with him in 2013. “We have a lot of options (such as) suspensions, (stripping him) of his belt. I can’t judge right now. I can’t judge right now because I’ve been one of his biggest supporters. Everybody told me not to support him, but I supported him. But I guarantee you we’ll look at this video.

I hope he isn't suspended, and that he gets stabbed in the eye with barbed fish hooks in his next match. There is an entire SAW franchise of things that should be done to him. This is far worse than killing a lion. Hundreds of lions are killed every year. There has only been one Polhares in my lifetime. Watching him, you can feel the weight of all the terrible things that humans are capable of doing to each other.

I'm thinkin' you ain't been in many scuffles, DY. I knew several fellers stood well under six foot, and in the 135-160 pound class, that had no problems in a good bar fight. Of course, you and I probably have different definitions of what a "bar brawl" is.
And Koolio, you know how I feel about an Estwing framer; It's one of the finest close quarters combat weapons ever made.

I size is a factor. It's not the only factor, and probably not even in the Top 3.

"Toughness"... ability to take a punch.
"Awareness"... being "ahead" of the fight... getting in the first punch.
"Ferocity"... willingness to use whatever "tools" are at hand.
"Skill"... any fighting skill a person may have.
"Speed"... self explanatory
"Strength"... related to size, but not all big guys are strong.

These are all more important than size.

"Awareness"... being "ahead" of the fight... getting in the first punch.
"Ferocity"... willingness to use whatever "tools" are at hand.
"Skill"... any fighting skill a person may have.
"Speed"... self explanatory
"Strength"... related to size, but not all big guys are strong.

These are all more important than size.

Size is not the key factor in bar brawls between untrained, regular joes. Size and strength ARE key factors in top level fighters who've been tough and athletic enough to make it to that level.

Mayweather is 5'8" and weighs about 151lbs.

He is an elite athlete, and is trained in the art of Boxing.
Boxers are trained primarily to use their hands to fight.

Rhonda Rousey is 5'7" and weighs about 135lbs.

She is an elite athlete, and is trained in Judo and MMA.
She is trained to use her entire body as a weapon.

Assuming an "anything goes" MMA style fight..

If Mayweather got a clear punch or two in early, he would very likely win and possibly knock Rousey out.

If Rousey could get him off his feet an grapple, she has the technique and speed to possible beat him.

He is NOT TRAINED to fight a grappling style match from the ground. He's trained to box.
