Foe list to affect quoted text

Post by clangfield »

Concise description:
  • Remove any quoted text from a foe in a forum post
Specifics/Details:
  • If I've foed someone because I don't like the things they post in the forum, then I won't see their posts by default (but have the option to display it if I wish). However, if someone I haven't foed subsequently quotes the post from the foe, I should have the same option to display or not to display that post - or, if possible, just the text from the foe.
How this will benefit the site and/or other comments:
  • Help player retention by reducing stress and antagonism between players.

Yes.
I don't know if the code is at all possible. I'm just suggesting an option.
It's purely because I have foed some people so that I don't have to read what I anticipate and consider to be inane or offensive posts (I know I can avoid the forum altogether, but that's not the point). Fortunately the main culprit is not around now but there are still one or two from whom I don't wish to read anything at all that they say.
I'm quite happy if you can suggest a reason why this is a bad idea, or impossible to code, but please provide a rationale (or support it if you like the idea).

This is not exactly simple to accomplish in practice. A forum post using phpBB (the forum software we use) does not link to a user when you quote their post. The quote functionality just inserts the username as text into the phpBB "quote" tag, but it's not formally linked or associated with the quoted post or the quoted user. So the solution has to manually search through the text of the post and match any quotes to your foe's usernames.

It looks like someone worked this out though: https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtop ... &t=2158922

So I guess it would be possible for someone to add this mod to our own forum software.

I understand, thanks for the detail, I didn't think it would be straightforward, but that solution looks promising :)

Just to add to this... should the foe list also block messages to one's inbox and wall? If one is getting harassed by another, and wishes to block all possible lines of communication, can the foe list have a universal effect, please?

Until this is implemented, I guess I'll just have to delete any incoming messages without reading them, but it's a bit tedious.

ok... i think i understand what you are asking for... sounds like you kind of just need to grow up and monitor yourself... sorry that reading opinions of others that differ from your obtuse world view, upsets you so. the solution to this is for you to start your own USER GROUP and only allow in those that meet your posting guidelines. if they break your group's guidelines, they are bounced... simple enough... sorry, CC can't babysit your eyeballs in the forums and inbox... i do not believe in the foe feature and receive tons of PM's from people that i don't know, have never interacted with and have no idea what they want... i pop them open, browse them and act accordingly... if seeing words affects you to such a great degree, perhaps you should seek professional help and a low dose of some sort of medication to help you through the rigors of the CC forums and in-box.

And thank you for so vividly demonstrating why those who refuse to engage with the full community shouldnt be allowed to make suggestions.

Knock it off. This forum is not the place for quarrelsome conduct between users. Take it to GD.

in other words, "i can't stand it when someone smarter than me, puts me in my place and shows me how silly my thought process or lack thereof, truly is. kid, i told you how to accomplish what you wanted, but you don't want to see it, because you are obtuse and see things in two ways, CLANG and WRONG. start a user group and do us all a favor. i'm sure you'll top the 3 member mark in no time. good luck.

the road to becoming an implemented suggestion is long and complicated... kind of like that whole School House Rock, "i'm just a bill", but more like this:

now, back to the suggestion. this user is basically asking the site to protect him from seeing quotes of users he has blocked, so he can enjoy an even MORE CENSORED version of the forums. too long to code for one persons inability to cope with people that disagree with him or call him out for what he is, a troll. my suggestion to him of starting his own user group and running gestapo over said group, is the only way this user is going to enjoy the forums. or perhaps, just stay out of the forums like 99% of the site. the solution to his problem already exists and this feeble and anemic suggestion should be closed... especially before Mets come's back in here acting like a kindergarten teacher (knock it off!! was that even a serious attempt at moderation? my god, no wonder Mets has a nice shade of Jr. Mint green going on... love you Mets!!)... the black jesus has spoken and declared this suggestion dead...-Jésus noir

Once more, if you do not have anything constructive to add to the conversation, stay out of it.
