so if California, The EU & Canada ban 'Single Use plastics"... what happens to the Soda Pop industry in those areas...?

no more:
- 20-oz sodas
- 2-liters of soda

to extend the "single use plastics' thought...
what about
- Tampons.. the outer shell casings are basically mini-plastic bottles.. they are 'single use'..
- food storage at groceries like say a Cottage Cheese container.. it's a 'single use' plastic
- Shampoo containers
- milk jugs & juice containers
- zip-lock baggies
- political campaign yard signs.. ( they are a single use plastic... )
- trash bags

and especially :
- plastic Dixie cups ( I mean .. what will happen at sporting events.. are you actually going to serve beer in a metal can or a glass bottle...? there is a reason they serve drinks in plastic cups at these events.... I can't wait to see the next Soccer (Futbol) match in the EU with beer bottles being served... )

If the Soda Pop industry was to go extinct, I wouldn't cry for them. Would be good for our health as well as the environment. However, I don't think they will. There are tons of options beyond single-use plastic -- metal, glass, and multi-use plastics.

For the rest I'll use the colour method to avoid a bunch of unweildy quotes:

no more:
- 20-oz sodas
- 2-liters of soda
Probably before your time, but before the 2-litre plastic bottles, the "large" bottle of soft drinks was sold in a 1.5 litre glass bottle. Not sure what you're referring to by 20-oz. If it's a bottle, it can go to glass. If it's the Big Gulp type of on-the-spot drink, it can go in a big paper cup.

I already see people at Bulk Barn bring in their own reusable containers to buy stuff like that. However, even if most of us don't want to go through that hassle, there are tons of options -- waxed paper boxes, tin cans, reusable glass. Back home cottage cheese was mostly sold just as a brick wrapped in waxed paper. The wetter kind that's sold here wouldn't be good for that, but a waxed-paper carton like 1-litre milk would work fine.
- Shampoo containers
Plastic bottles are ideal here, but you can get away from single-use plastic and use refillable bottles.
- milk jugs & juice containers
The world got by fine on earthen pots for millennia. After that we went to refillable glass bottles. After that we switched to refillable plastic jugs. When I came to Canada most people still used refillable jugs -- half-gallon glass or one-gallon plastic.
- zip-lock baggies
Take your lunch to work in Tupperware that can be re-used thousands of times. Other options are waxed paper for sandwiches or Mason jars for wetter things.
- political campaign yard signs.. ( they are a single use plastic... )
The plastic signs actually didn't come out until the 1980s. Most signs before that were cardboard and could easily go back to that. Considering most are used for only a few weeks, there's no need for anything with more longevity than cardboard.
- trash bags
This is one of the harder things to replace, but there are options. For dry waste, it can go directly into your reusable trash can that gets emptied into the truck with no need for a bag in it. For wetter things like kitchen waste or cat litter, there is the biodegradable type of plastic that can go to the composter. We already use the big paper bags for yard waste; those could actually be used for a lot of other things that currently uses plastic bags, like picking up trash on the highway, etc. Still, I agree that the convenience of the big all-purpose plastic garbage bag will be one of the harder things to give up.

and especially :

Obviously nobody is going to allow glass bottles at events like that. Tin cans aren't so bad; I've seen venues that allow those. An even better option is paper cups. Another is letting people bring their own refillable plastic cups and just selling the beer from a tap with no container.

Glass has to be melted in a furnace & molded.. which would require a massive amount of energy... also it would have to be very thick glass in order to keep it from breaking. Shipping weights would soar.. requiring even more energy.. both of those details would cause a massive amount of pollution..

Metal:
metal would also require a furnace to melt & mold.. requiring massive energy requirements.. also in order to keep up with demand at current world population levels.. more mining operations would have to pop up.. destroying more of the environment.

paper:
the shear amount of trees that would have to be cut down in order to produce a sustainable substitute for plastics would not be feasible.. trees do not grow fast enough.. also.. it would require massive deforestation.. destroying the very things that breathe the CO2 everyone is scared of.

re-fillable customer owned items:
in order to even think about implementing this policy. the customer owned refillables would never pass FDA guidelines & companies would be getting sued every minute over people getting sick because their re-fillable wasn't sterilized or properly up to safe clean item levels required for food.. the average customer would have to take food safety courses on proper food handling & be forced to sign a waiver that they are purchasing the food ' at their own risk'..
because who would you blame for say a E.coli poisoning incident.. which 1 was tainted, -->was it the food served at the grocery or was it the customers re-fillable .. ?

in order to be able to use Paper as a substitute for plastics.. it would have to be wax coated.. ( unless you are actually wanting to coat it in plastic, which defeats the purpose entirely)..

Wax Paper is toxic. & is not recyclable..

Wax paper is considered "mixed paper" because it is paper coated with wax. Other "mixed paper" products that can't be recycled are: milk and juice cartons, stickers, and plastic laminated paper (the kind of paper that wraps fast food hamburgers and the like.) It does eventually break down. But the problem is that wax paper usually has synthetic additives (usually petroleum)…
Generally they can be poisonous. It's strange that science can be about semantics. Even though it's naturally formed, and it is carbon based, the leaching of hydro carbons into compost can and will poison it. Normally to a tiny amount which won't hurt us, but it can denature some of the bacteria, and leave carcinogens. The reason we try to avoid it is that if we left all things to break down naturally, those poisons build up.
