I wonder if they're using "spoils" as uncountable, in which case less is correct. But of course, in this game there literally are countable amounts of spoils. The conclusion is that it doesn't really matter, and at this point changing it would probably sound weirder to people than keeping it.
If players selected only 1 or 2 spoils, the alert that pops up should say 'you have selected fewer than three spoils'
However, at present it currently says 'less than three spoils'
This should change
