Farming is where a player actively recruits new recruits or players of a much lower standard eg: Paulatpeace.
Joining new recruit games en masses always used to be referred to as 'Ranching'. But that would have been before your time here

So, is 'Ranching' not the same as 'Farming' re: punishment/rule-breaking?

I view farming as the more serious of the two.
Ranching is more of an opportunist 'crime'. Farming involves more intent.
