Report: Alcohol abuse a "big problem" in Finland, main cause of preventable deaths. Alcohol was found to be the biggest cause of preventable deaths in 15 welfare regions across Finland, suicide was the biggest factor in 5 regions and ischemic heart disease in three.
So is the lesson here that America should emulate Finland? If so, we'd need to:
- abolish the minimum.wage, like Finland
- establish an official, national church, like Finland
- reintroduce the military draft, like Finland
- lower the corporate tax rate from 30% to 20%, like Finland
- use the armed forces to control the borders, like Finland
Even Project 2025 doesn't go half this far. Let's do it!

Finland among the best in the world
Finland is a small country on a global scale. The population of Finland makes up just 0.07 per cent of the world's population and its area as much of the total world area. But even a small country can jump to the top of the world, and this is what Finland has done: in international country comparisons of positive things Finland is often among the top countries next to other Nordic countries.
In honour of Finland's centenary celebrations, we collected a list of comparisons in which Finland is one of the best in the world. The list below was last time updated on 5 December 2018, when Finland was for the last day one hundred years old. An updated list is available at Independence Day 2019.

Paid Time Off (PTO) in Finland
Vacation Quota (Annual Leave)
5 weeks (usually 4 weeks of summer vacation and 1 week of winter vacation)
Employees in Finland are entitled to paid vacation of 2.5 days per month after a full year of employment. This comes to 5 full weeks of paid vacation, or 25 days annually.
Nota Bene: Officially, employees will actually receive 30 days of paid vacation, because Saturday is also calculated as a workday, even for employees who don’t regularly work on Saturday. Employees accrue and take vacation based on weekdays. A weekday is considered to be any day other than Sunday or a public holiday. Therefore, a complete week of vacation includes 6 days (including Saturday), even for employees with a regular 5-day week. A similar calculation exists in France as well.
On top of that, employees have 13 days off on public holidays.

The only thing that would improve Finland is establishing a Buc'ees. I finally visited a Buc-ees in Texas and enjoyed their delicious pulled pork sandwich. Buc-ees business model is second to none!

My wife ordered me a fox Ushanka hat and herself some matryoshka dolls from Russia some years back.
We were placed on a watch list for the order.
I wish I was exaggerating.

How did you find out that your wife and you were on some type of watch list? Black helicopters flying above your house?

I happen to have a rather large fondness for this country for the following reasons in no particular order :
Tikka bolt-action rifles are the best VFM on the planet(imo, anyways).
Fiskars axes & mauls are the best in the world. seriously, if you split your own wood & aren't using a Fiskars, you are missing out and are quite possibly an idiot.
Kyro distillery makes some of the finest gin & rye whiskey I've ever had the pleasure of imbibing. definitely world class...
and lastly, Varusteleka - their Sarma brand makes excellent outdoor gear & clothing.

@mook : can’t go wrong w/the Sarma merino wool hoodie(I liked it so much, I bought a 2nd one) & the Sarma shorts - best shorts I’ve ever owned(got 3 pairs now). the backpacks are great, as well - bought a 3 day for camping/hunting/travelling& shopping and a one day for longish rides. gonna grab a boonie hat as soon as they’re back in stock, I think.
