Democrat Tim Walz and Republican JD Vance will meet for their one and only vice-presidential debate on Tuesday night in New York City.

While the stakes in these kind of running-mate face-offs are typically low – an undercard to the presidential main event - this one might be different.

In a tight race that could be decided by tens of thousands of votes in a handful of states, every opportunity to generate positive attention and political momentum is precious.

At the very least, the debate will be a fascinating contrast between two men with very different styles and political beliefs and two campaigns with distinct strategies for winning the White House.

Walz was repeatedly called-out on the lies he's told about his biography. He stuck to his stock response that he keeps repeating each time a new lie is uncovered: "I'm a buffoon."

Walz sought to defend his past claim that he was in Hong Kong during the 1989 Tiananmen Square student protests in China, calling himself a “knucklehead” in a windy response, but eventually saying he misspoke.

Margaret Brennan asked him about the claim and reporting that found Walz did not travel to Asia until August of that year, a couple months after the protest took place.

“I try to do the best I can, but I’m not perfect. I’m a knucklehead at times,” he said.

The code switching from Vance from reprehensible asshole to someone who pretends to care was actually quite impressive.
Walz should have attacked him way more and call him out on his bs, he let so many chances fly by.....could have easily destroyed him.
Anyways, this did nothing for the election, no one will remember that doocy in 2 days.

Overall, both Vance and Walz did well. There were no big gaffes that I saw or heard.

I think Vance did better overall, in command of the facts. I think Vance did a good job explaining much of Trump policies and successes in his first term. I think Walz spent too much time talking about Minnesota and he was not solid in explaining what Kamala what she wants to do. I blame THAT on Kamala being so vague, other than a few promises, more joy in the future, and the idea that she can do better leading as President than she did as Biden's VP.

Vance came across very well as warm, empathetic, and knowledgeable. He handled adversity well.

Walz did okay, even good at parts, but seemed to have been caught off-guard by the question of his being in China during Tiananmen Square protests. He had to admit that he had misspoken on the matter.

There was criticism that Vance avoided the question of Trump losing the 2020 election. I disagree; Vance did say that there was a peaceful transition of power on January 20, 2020.

I am happy that there was sharp and intelligent, and even cordial discussion. There was clash, but no personal attacks. They even agreed a bit on some issues. The last question showed a sharp conflict and they disagreed. GOOD. Folks can disagree and can still be civil, and I applaud that. Civility is often missing in discussions here, as this Forum is often overrun with trolls and comments trolling for emotional outbursts.

Did the debate "move the needle"? It may have a wee bit, especially among some women, in favor of Vance and thus Trump, too. BUt the race for POTUS is still very close.

I think I said it already: this election may come down to as few as 20,000 voters in 8 key battleground states, and I doubt many of THEM were watching tonight.

Despite the rule about NO fact checking, Vance was fact checked about Springfield, Ohio and he did mention that well and tried to explain the change of immigration rules by Kamala. Also, I thought that too often both moderators said that time was UP, after the speaker (candidate) STOPPED talking. They did this to both candidates.

What do you think about the VP Debate?

As bas as Trump did in that 2nd debate, Walz was just as horrible if not worse. Luckily for Harris, most people don't make a decision based on a VP debate.

Walz looked nervous and scared. His best shot of the night was when he asked JD Vance about Trump's denial of the 2020 election results. Vance really didn't answer the question, but made up some stuff about "looking forward to the future". Walz couldn't really answer about his timeline on visiting Tiananmen square. But the most bizarre line of the night was when he said he was friends with school shooters. He also called himself a knucklehead at times. Those two instances killed any chance of him winning the debate.

Vance's best line of the night regarding Harris: Day 1 was 1,400 days ago.
