The Atlantic lied. They never submitted an invoice. Ergo, there would be no canceled check. Moreover, the woman was buried at Arlington National Cemetery after Trump changed her death status to KIA. Arlington isn't a pay-for-burial cemetery.
So in other words, he still welched on his promise and passed the cost on to the taxpayer.

First, an Arlington burial is a military operation of the U.S. armed forces. I strongly doubt the Department of Defense is set-up to accept credit card payments to privately finance an inflight refueling, a round of artillery fire, or a military funeral.
Second, from a quick Google search, it appears 32 CFR § 553 actually prohibits private payment for military funerals anyway to prevent commoditization.
