Is there a policy against offensive usernames?

Post by delorean »

This member, for example: http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/profil ... e&u=117723

I asked him in game chat and via PM what his handle is supposed to mean, and have gotten no reply. Is there a CC policy that governs usernames?

thanks.

There is no policy about offensive usernames here, sorry.
The mods cant do anything about it...

I have seen many worse names than "queerkiller" and i dont remember any of them being removed, except for one pro-nazi guy that was a lot of trouble.

Instead of going around thinking that people shouldn't offend you, why don't you try being a bit more open-minded? Just ignore whatever you don't care much for instead of whining about it.

That's funny because I would've thought someone calling themselves 'QueerKiller' would be a lot less opened minded than someone who was calling them on that shit.

That's the whole point. Why would you feel any urge to call on anyone? I'm not calling on people who use some stupid Che Guevara nickname. I find such nicks to be very bad taste, but instead of getting involved, I respect peoples' choice here. I find it stupid, but I can't walk around being the karma police here on CC. Nor should anyone else really. Just because one may be subjectively offended doesn't mean one should get involved.

For lessons on how to be an ass dial up delorean at 1-816-asshole, that's 1-816-asshole, remember it is an 816 number not an 800 number.

Open-minded? What the hell are you talking about? If Delorean takes offence to the name, how is that making him narrow-minded? You idiot.

It is obvious that you personally didn't approve of the name. And that's fine. But what i don't understand is that you bother to send an e-mail and start a threat in the cheating and abuse forum. You have not been abused or cheated on. All that has happened is that you may have been offended. And frankly, people who starts complaining as soon as they get offended, those I find whining.

Anarchy? Jebus... Who is to determine what is offensive or not? And from who's perspective? The perspective of kids? That of gays? Or that of Muslims? PETA maybe?

Or we can just all get on with our lives, choosing whatever we names and avatars we want, and then ignore those which we find stupid when we interact. I don't see no reason for why we would need to be sheltered from "offensive" usernames and avatars. Sheltered people tend be become annoying SOB's who walk the face of earth telling other people what to think and do. Good riddance.

Since you obviously aren't capable of reading posts and/or understanding them - let me explain it: It's ok to be offended. But always acting out on it I find narrow-minded and stupid.

How so?

Che Guevara can hardly be equated with a violently homophobic username.

For the record the OP was completely correct to challenge the vile choice of username in my opinion. I applaud them.

Alstergen in my country the UK you can get sued for calling someone a nigger!!!

Shall ui get a username nigger killa. I think that would create quite a strom. Dont you?

There is a line, a very faint one but it is there. I dont personally have any feelings towards guys and yes i do have a few gay friends.

But im afraid having the name queer killer is fucking offensive and if you think otherwise well you got a problem or otherwise you dislike gays...Which is it?

I agree with humley.
If there is no policy on usernames, then one should be created. This is not an adult only site therefore no swearing - adultcontent should be allowed along with no bigotry, racism, sexism etc.

But with the one exampled, how many children do you think know what Queer means? And also queer can mean many things, but the way the name is done, I'm sure a child wouldn't know what that is.
But I agree that some names shouldn't be allowed

Curses are part of the language as any other words. Banning "swearing" would be ridiculous. How could one possibly set any such language rules not resulting in arbitrary lines being drawn. If individuals venture out on the Internet, I believe that they, in the same way as if they venture out on any other public space, should be prepared to hear, read or see things that they may not personally approve of. That's part of the social contract.

However, if you're serious - I assume that you are ok with banning Che Guevara nicknames and avatars as well considering that Guevara, in the wake of the revolution on Cuba, personally was responsible for quite a few executions of former Cuban government officials and dissidents.

if children dont know what it means so be it. But if im a gay guy why should i have to play against some1 called queer killa. And lets not disillusion ourselves as we all not what it means.

This site is very lacks in what it allows and im afraid thats it not good enough. We are all on this site to have fun i hope and to play the great game of risk in a fun atmosphere.

I play alot of online poker and rude and offensive names are not allowed. Furthermore if you swear (in game) it is censored and if reported u get a month ban if guilty. If you are convicted 3 times you get a lifelong chat ban!

Now these online poker companies are big business so that must be doing something right!

The word "nigger" is just a word. And a word, together with words such as "nigga", "hoes" etc., commonly used in popular music today. Such words may be offensive to people in general or when used in certain contexts. The same goes for the word "fucking" as you used yourself.

Putting that aside, the discussion here merely concerned a name used, "QueerKiller". It may not be the most tasteful name, but considering the problems following with imposing certain views on other people when not necessary, I find it strange that people are bothered with it to such a degree that they feel obliged to write e-mails and start threads in the forums. Just because something may be offensive, doesn't mean that the ones offended have a right to cry "ban".

All in all though, there are rules ensuring that certain kinds of behavior in the game chats and forums will not affect the wider community. Players starting ranting, spamming, or in general intruding on other players can be kicked out. That should be enough. So far there hasn't been any problems in this respect, which really should make us all happy as we go on with our gaming. Until there's a real problem, I see no reason why we would be happier knowing that a set of rules governing usernames and avatars are put in place.

1. You never have to play against anyone. If you don't care much for another player, don't join his or hers games and use your ignore list. problem solved on an individual basis.

2. Not good enough with a liberal set of rules? Well, that sounds like fascism to me. Maybe if you tried to be a little more opened-minded and thought about the consequences of your ideas here, you'd change your minds.

What may happen is this: Some people get a curse ban in place. Some other people get anti-gay, anti-sexist rules in place. Then comes other groups, being offended by the Jesus Freaks clan, managing to ban those. Then maybe some people wants to start banning certain older flags/symbols in avatars since they aren't PC these days. It could go on for ever, we all ending up with a complete idiotic site.

3. Yes. But just because ExxonOil and British American Tobacco are big business doesn't mean that they are doing everything right. Don't be ridiculous.
