No offense meant in the title.

I was wondering if there was any way that I could transfer a liscense for windows xp from one hard drive with a legal version to another hard drive which, shall we say, is challenged in that area. (amazingly, not my fault) If so, how?

Copying it for a friend? well i'm not sure if that is possible....i highly doubt it but i do have the code for XP so you can fully re-enstall it on the other hard drive.

I'll put it this way: unless your copy of XP has a license that allows for multiplies copies of said OS to be installed on more then 1 HDD - it's not easy, nor is it pleasant. It requires being a pirate. Which I won't go into here because I'm not about to get my account banned, or the site owner to suddenly get a nice little post in the mail from Microsoft about a lawsuit.

These sort of things used to be civilized! You'd copy a floppy, and all you'd get is a rap song about not copying that floppy!

and the code is not mine....there is a program (highly expensive) that my dad had when he worked at sprint which gave him codes for ALL microsoft programs until vista.....so ya.....you wont get in trouble

well, I got my paws on a computer (donated to my schools robotics team, and they didn't want it). It has XP on it. That's all that's on there that's worth much of anything. Right now, I'm running on the slightly less than legal version that's on my main computer. I was wondering if I could transfer it [the license]from the crap computer to my main one.

Download it online and just use a cracked serial on it, nobody cares about Windows XP now anyways Microsoft is too busy bullshitting all there Vista users ( the numbers of which, are dwindling ) with useless crap.

Are you looking to copy the license, or transfer it? After you transfer the license, are you going to remove XP from the computer you got from the robotics team?

I intend to format the hard drive of the one I got from the robotics team after getting anything and everything that could be useful off of it.

The copy of XP on the workstation is probably an OEM copy, who's license is valid only for the computer it comes with. If it is a Retail copy though, it is a valid practice to move the serial key to another workstation. I assume that both computers are using Home or Pro.

You can find the serial key of the valid workstation using the Magic Jelly Bean application, located here.

I believe the tool will also allow you to change your serial key.

Please note, I cannot be held responsible if you screw shit up or are indeed breaking the law. But I have used this before, for legitimate reasons, when I need to wipe a computer and re-install the OS, but the system does not have a key on the side of it. I typically Google the key found to verify it's legitimate.

No, but what he could do instead is have both drives hooked up, tell the computer to boot off the drive from the shitty computer and use his other drive as a storage drive.

DO NOT switch the drives. The OS is installed & configured to work with the hardware in the computer. If you switch the drives, it will probably either blue screen, or boot successfully and re-install drivers for all the new hardware thats in the new computer....

Either way, it leaves you with a pile of crap.

I'm already doing that with my current computer. I'm probably going to go with what bedub1 said, but first, I'm going to back it all up
