Yea, jay, I'm sorry to inform you, but smotlz is not only better skill-wise, he is more versitle and durable. I know you want to say glavine was better b/c he plays for your team, but he's just not.

The team as a whole is better and that will be the decider!

That's only why Glavine has almost 100 more wins, 1000 more innings pitched, and 9 more shutouts. However Smoltz has 154 more saves, like 450 less walks, 300 more strikeouts, and a .20 lower career ERA.

Exactly, the reason Smoltz has less wins and less innings, and less shutouts is because he was a closer for most of his career. I guess it is debatable who is more durable, but I still say Smoltz is more versitle and just plain better.

Actually Smoltz has been a starter for most of his carreer. The 154 saves came in a three or four year span where we felt we needed him as closer more (That and he had injured his shoulder and didn't have enough endurance for the starter position for a while.) And wins do not define a pitcher, A pitcher can have a 0.01 era through 200 games and come out with 200 no decisions (HIGHLY unlikely but theoretically possible.) Or a pitcher can have a very high era in the same 200 game span and still come out with 90 or more wins. ERA and strike outs are more solid statistics for telling how good a pitcher is (particularly ERA) and in those categories Smoltz has glavine beat.

tell that to the team, not the fans. It was a good game and Smoltz pitched 7 solid innings (though the 7th was a little scary, just a little). My only regret about the Braves right now is that they don't play every team the way they play the Mets. If we did we would have a substantial lead in the division right now.

Steinbrenner has issued a statement saying Brian Cashman is "in the hotseat" due to yankees crappy performance.
