You've got the wrong country. You mean Afghanistan. The whole lie about WMDs was the reason to invade Iraq.

Well, you asked, and I provided. I noticed you haven't refuted anything so you must agree as well. ;)

9/11 was a convenient excuse to invade Iraq. After all, Osama is there...and all those WMD's...and the evil-doers...and the massive training camps.

Oh not again.....
There was no lie.... That implies malicious intent on WAY too many people (and gov'ts) to be credible. I'm not going to get back into the WMD debate, just clarifying the difference between faulty intelligence and an all out "lie".

You've missed the obvious hyperbole in the same vein as Jays original post.

That's the debate which we've already discussed.

Whether they were there or not (our debate) is not what I'm referring to. Assuming they were not there EVER (which I disagree with), the idea that the powers that be (Bush, CIA, MI6, U.N., Clinton, Gore, Kerry, etc.) lied to promote a war is preposterous.

A movie about the destructive force of the 9/11 "Terrorist" attacks.
From a scientific standpoint.

See, faulty intel. Now we're not even sure if we invaded iraq at all. The CIA had a massive brain-fart this time, that's for sure.

If they wanted to invade Iraq for WMD's, they didn need 9/11. WMD's by themselves, even in the hand of a dictator, would have been enough to start the war.

We would have used the UN as we have countless times against Iraq. Pre-911 there was not a significant terror threat. After 911 we basically told the UN to stick it. And the world understood. (well, for the most part)

No significant terror threat prior to 9-11?

1970 - The first mass hijacking occurred in 1970, the so-called Dawson's Field hijackings, when the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine seized control of two American planes and one Swiss airliner, all bound from Europe to the United States, to punish the United States for supporting Israel. The Pan Am, TWA and Swissair planes were blown up on the ground in Jordan and Egypt.

1979 - US Embassy in Pakistan attacked by mob mistakenly blaming the US for radical Islamic faction hostage crisis in Mecca.

1983 - Bombing of US Embassy in Beirut, April 18, 1983

1983 - Bombing of Marine Barracks, Beirut, October 23, 1983

1984 - Twenty-two people were killed (2 of them American) and seventy were wounded when a van loaded with four hundred pounds of explosives exploded in front of the U.S. Embassy annex in Awkar, Lebanon. Islamic Jihad (code name of Hezbollah) claimed responsibility for the bombing in a call to the media.

1985 - TWA Flight 847 hijacked, U.S. Navy diver killed

1985 - Achille Lauro hijacking, wheel-chair bound American killed by Palestinian terrorists

1986 - Four Americans were killed and nine people, including five Americans, were injured when a bomb exploded aboard TWA Flight 840 as it traveled from Rome to Athens.

1988 - Pan Am Flight 103, outbound from London for New York with 259 people aboard, was destroyed by a bomb on December 21, 1988 while over Lockerbie, Scotland. All aboard the aircraft were killed as were eleven persons on the ground.

1993 - First World Trade Center bombing, February 26: 6 Killed, 1,000 injured

1995 - Killing of two US Diplomats in Pakistan, March 8, 1995

1996 - Khobar Towers bombing: 19 American servicemen killed

1998 - US embassy bombings: U.S. Kenya Embassy blown up, 214 killed (12 Americans); U.S. Tanzania Embassy blown up, 10 killed

2000 - USS Cole attacked, 17 U.S. Navy sailors killed

Let me clarify. No significant terror threat that was on US soil AND killed thousands of people. Americans were not expecting something on the scale of 911 until 911...which gave Bush a reason for his invasion of Iraq. Had he invaded Iraq over WMD's without 911 happening, he would have came against strong resistance. He used 911 and the threat of wmd's as a reason to invade Iraq. Give me a break. We knew Iraq has had wmd's for years (we gave them to him).

Right, they couldn'tve used any of those other events as cause for danger because 3000 people didn't die.

Maybe that's what it'll take to lower gas prices and regulate the prescription drug industry too.

It's a sobering thought to think that the only reason people stopped using asbestos was only because people were suing about it.

So...with 20/20 hindsite...do you still think this Iraq "war" was necessary and vital to our national security?

Knowing what you know now, would you do it again if you were president?

Firstly, what resistence do you mean? From the American people? He came under immense resistence from the international community anyway! No-one outside America seriously links 9/11 and Iraq in an honest sense. As for the WMDs, no they didn't exist. We haven't found them and the intellegence was wrong.

fwiw i believe there was something like 400,000 americans (a pretty small number considering but still) who protested the iraq invasion before it actually happened. Bush i believe was famously quoted in response "i dont listen to focus groups"

going into a social science discipline....i can only dream that my focus groups will total 400,000.

I was away on my honeymoon in Hawaii. The answer is no. I think Backglass did a pretty good job refuting the points that were made in favor of the conspiracy. I also admired the way he refuted another conspiracy declaring that the US never landed on the moon.

Hawaii, nice year-round. So I've heard.

And let us then agree to disagree.
