I think the politically correct term is "little mammal". I do not like to be grouped with such disgusting creatures as mice and rats.

Is it a fungus (technically not a plant)?

Honestly, I am really stumped right now. I study biology so I know the different kingdoms of living things and since you ruled out Animalia and Plantae, that leaves only Monera (which is bacteria), Protista (mainly algae), and Fungi (what I guessed above). For some reason, I find it hard to believe that you would pick something from Monera or Protista (unless it is a bacterial disease :-s ) simply because they are often grouped with animalia or plantae.

My apologies but:

Eastern Gray Squirrel, Sciurus carolinensis
Scientific classification
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Rodentia
Family: Sciuridae

Are you calling wikipedia a liar??

for reference purposes

Biota (all living things)
- viruses
- domain Bacteria
- domain Archaea
- domain Eukaryota

Eukaryota
- Kingdom Animalia = Animal kingdom
- Kingdom Plantae = Plant kingdom
- Kingdom Protista = Protist kingdom
- Kingdom Fungi = Fungi kingdom
- Kingdom Chromista = Moneran kingdom

Living things are divided into three groups based on their genetic similarity. The three groups are:

* Archaea: very ancient prokaryotic microbes.
* Eubacteria: More advanced prokaryotic microbes.
* Eukaryota: All life forms with eukaryotic cells including plants and animals

* Kingdom Protista – Organisms with just one eukaryotic cell
* Kingdom Fungi – Including mushrooms and other fungus
* Kingdom Plantae – Including trees, grass and flowers
* Kingdom Animalia – all animals

therefore:
The Chromista are a eukaryotic supergroup, probably polyphyletic,[1] which may be treated as a separate kingdom or included among the Protista. They include all algae whose chloroplasts contain chlorophylls a and c, as well as various colorless forms that are closely related to them. These are surrounded by four membranes, and are believed to have been acquired from some red alga.
so is it algea?
