As Christians, we don't celebrate Halloween
Odd. I went to a Catholic elementary school that has an annual Halloween carnival type deal with numerous activities and games in the gym, while the 6th graders put on a haunted house.
"Eh, whatever."

We had something like that at my elementary school, we called it "Schlockey" (and others appear to as well).

Yes, that's it! Only the one I was in charge of was made out of wood and was a little taller on the outside edges. It only had 2 openings in the middle instead of 3 like the one you showed.

Respect only where respect is due. I agree with that.

So, if you're at a store counter buying food you don't think that it's proper conduct to atleast engage in a 'hello' and 'thankyou' with the person serving you? - It doesn't have to be any more than that
The entire point of manners are that you use them when encountering people you don't really know. If you only use them with people you know and like, you simply don't have any manners at all.

That game rocks. Used to play it all the time at church camp. We called it "Box Hockey", though that may not be it's real name.

If you require that people deserve your respect before you give it, and everyone else follows the same track, the world is a very cold unfriendly place compared to one in which you assume people deserve your respect until they prove otherwise.

Regarding the ha^3 issue: I agree with respecting people who deserve it, but I add on a bit more rules than just that. When first meeting or coming into contact with someone new, it's best to keep a clear mind, keep the option towards respect open--even if that guy was a complete jerk the first go-round. I'll give people a large "buffer zone," so to speak. At first, one may appear rude, but the reasons are usually unknown to others, so it's best to not assume that the seemingly rude person is always rude--that person was merely being rude in that one time situation.

Regarding thegreekdog's situation
: Holding the door open for someone who says nothing. Usually, I like to smile and say, "Hey, you're welcome, any time!" and keep smiling because that tends to make that person lighten up. If you make a joke, make light of a situation, then you provide a funny and enjoyable way out for that person. If you react negatively, you'll usually get a negative response--which is a poor choice on the door holder's part, and it's a childish decision as well.

EDIT: Please be aware that I've definitely thought the same kind of reactions that you have, and I don't want you to feel that I'm leaning over my Podium of Righteousness and repeatedly jabbing you in the gut with my Gavel of Awesomeness. We've all got things that we can improve upon, and I'm not that much better than most people--just a tiny bit. (god, I hope no one takes that last bit seriously...)

Regarding pimpdave's reaction: Generally, it's fun to mock people who are being rude at the time, but it usually makes the situation worse and never really improves anything. It tends to just double the amount of assholes in any given room.

EDIT: Generally, the TGD edit applies here as well, but if you want to pull out your internet club and start grunting like a cave man and dribbling out macho shit, I'm down.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Conclusion: Give people a few chances, then make a decision afterwards. I'd say it's usually best to respect almost everyone because not everyone is an asshole all the time. If I can get someone talking about something else, or if I could change the scenario with some someone I generally dislike, then I can sometimes bring out some good things from someone. This also provides me with the opportunity to learn a lot by using another person's perspectives.
As much as I don't like Rush Limbaugh's political views, I'm sure I could have a pleasant half hour or one hour conversation with him on something else--PILLS! No no no, something more pleasant than addiction problems. SEX!? Maybe, but there's so many interesting topics out there to choose other than drugs, race, politics, and fucking.

Well, the Catholics "stole" Halloween and made it All Saints Day a day later, so it's easy to get them mixed up, even for Catholics.

I know. The pope back then was allergic to pumpkins, that's why he wanted the date changed and we now have two of the celebrations.

Alright, I know I do this allot, but I wanted to try to diffuse the situation here, although I don't want to horde the responsibility. It's not that there is flaming going on, per say. It's just that everyone is getting all firey, ect. Definitly we don't need to be sending out congradulations. I'm not saying your stupid or anything. This whole situation is just wierd.

Anyway, I wait with baited breath, in the throws of agony, for you're reply.

I don't know where you're from, but where I'm from, that's going to be interpreted as throwing fuel on the fire. If you're going to do something that retarded, you might as well just stick out your foot and trip the person as they're going through the door. Which is to say, you're doing the exact same kind of thing we're describing as being hilarious counters to people seriously lacking in manners.

And my behavior does not double the number of assholes in the room, that number remains constant, it's just that one of the assholes (me) is a funny asshole entertaining others, whereas the first asshole is banal narcissist who only entertains his own ego.

Right, it depends on the situation, which is why I used the word "usually." Also, my tone is lost on this flat screen of words, so this one example of mine lacks the emotion and the delivery which I'm trying to convey. So, here we are at this misunderstanding.
And my behavior does not double the number of assholes in the room, that number remains constant, it's just that one of the assholes (me) is a funny asshole entertaining others, whereas the first asshole is banal narcissist who only entertains his own ego.
Hahaha, OK, funny asshole, but you don't absolutely know that the first asshole "is [a] banal narcissist who only entertains his own ego." Even though you may be right about him, you're still making an assumption based on a one-time situation. As entertaining of an asshole you may be, you're still lacking manners, which really doesn't make you much better than the first asshole, right?
