I agree that Balsillie's thoughts were in the right place, but the way he handled things made it such that the NHL would never let him have a team. He went after any team that he thought he could get, including ones that would never move (like Pittsburgh). Plus, the way he played to the media meant that Bettman would never trust him. I liked his intentions, not his actions.Serbia wrote:This is true, but the best counter is strong ownership. The biggest reason the Wings have been at the top for 20 years, is owner Mike Ilitch. That's one of the reasons I was so supportive of Jim Basillie's attempt to buy the Coyotes. He had the financial backing, and wanted to move the team to Hamilton or Winnipeg, either of which HAD to be a more viable location than Phoenix. But that's what it's going to take to have competitive teams in Canada long-term. That, and getting rid of Gary Bettman.
I'm sorry, but this is stupid. It entirely defeats the point of a salary cap when you can simply cut a player at any point. There has to be some job security for the players, because they are human and will have bad runs at some point. The free cuts means GMs have total control to sign whoever they want for however much they want then cut them for no reason later on, which just defeats the whole point of a salary cap.ben79 wrote:yeah Bettman should go back to basketball, btw nice win over us last night, the NHL '' to be in good shape '' needs to do like the NFL, if a player is not giving his 100% you can kick him out of the team, the NFL is the best league for that and is in really good shape

I personally think the salary cap was a good move for the NHL, it was just handled poorly with the whole lockout (for which I blame Bob Goodenow and Ted Saskin as much as Gary Bettman) and has been handled terribly since then (the whole point of the salary cap was to cap player's salaries, and under the current cap limit players can make more than the highest pre-cap salary).
There is no other job in the world with no job security. What is the point in even signing a contract when the team can terminate it at any point with no penalty?ben79 wrote:denominator wrote:I agree that Balsillie's thoughts were in the right place, but the way he handled things made it such that the NHL would never let him have a team. i do not agree, NFL is the best league in the world and that is what they do, you still can have a salary cap and get rid of useless players. I mean come on these guys can't be kick out even if they are useless, imagine if a player does not wanna play anymore, you have to pay him his salary, that makes no sense to me, but that's just my opinion

Well the Quebec coat of arms symbolizes the entire country then as it has the Fleur de Lis, the english lion and the maple leaf of the native american peoples. It's a great coat of arms.ben79 wrote:Québecnotyou2 wrote:An avy is short for an avatar and an avatar is the picture you have in the upper right of your profile. Although I'm obligated to hate you based on the team you cheer for, I gotta agree with you.Serbia wrote:Wings scored on their first two shots against Brodeur, and cruised to an easy win against the once proud Devils. They sure have fallen off quickly, but that's what happens when you COMPLETELY abandon all logic and chase after a high priced player who never ever fit your system.

The Islanders were only great for hour years when they won the cup consecutively. Ironically this was during my four years in R.P.I.GreecePwns wrote:I thought the Islanders had a chance to, you know, not suck this year. Then they lost 8 in a row.

First they tried to pull some serious BS with his contract, then they still dumped wayyy too much money into him.
