Three newspapers published them as fact. These three newspapers got them from a Pakistani TV station.

It's public information U.S. public diplomacy operations plant stories in foreign media through matte's, VNRs, etc. ... that's not even been denied. They're prohibited by law from using the same tactics on American press. However, owing to the political economy of journalism, American press report stories told in foreign media as unverified fact and - more often than not - these are the same falsehoods planted by the USG (not in this case, however, it's still useful to demonstrate how the wheel turns). The USG is not dumb to this fact. It's one of the ways they propagandize the American public to support their foreign policy goals while remaining compliant of their laws and presenting the myth of democracy.

I would put the actuality of the matter somewhere in between this and "Osama being dead changes everything." But, inasmuch as the fact that this is sort of macabre and typical Americans-watch-too-many-cowboy-movies, a major foreign policy directive of the last 10 years has been to kill or capture Osama. When you satisfy a major policy objective, things change. It's true that this probably does little to damage AQ's operational ability, given that they're so self-sufficient, but the psychological and political effects will be huge.

Al Qaeda doesn't really have any operational ability. At this point it's a bunch of autonomous and separate factions trying to keep their heads down so we don't cut them off. They're no threat to us on our soil anymore. They're not much of a threat to us on their own soil. It's the insurgents and Taliban that are the bigger threat. And in Afghanistan they can't do much there either, for the same reason. But in Iraq our hands are tied behind our backs.
