How could the mayans even perceive the existence of polar ice caps? As far as I know, their calender simply ends at december 10, 2012. How does it end though? I don't think there's anything specific that they mentioned.

Maybe thats one possiblity you should explore!!!

Maybe that means that when god is done watching his/her creations develop, he/she will wipe them clean and begin to build the foundation for the universe (heaven, hell, and earth included) to play out in a different way.

Think like playing a game of RISK (the board game) with six friends. You play along creating a history of the game's world as you go. Making Allies, Enemies, and Truces. The territories are held for sometime, and change hands during an attack. The cycle goes on until someone wins or you all get bored of playing. After the game is over, the board is wiped clean along with the everything that happened while you were playing. Later on you start over, and though the playing field is the same, the placements, strategies, and course of events changes. A game of risk is rarely similar to another.

That's how I understand it.

which is why i voted it. But it has a hell of a lot more relevance than "Aliens taking over the world".

it's pretty much the same thing.

When the asteroid is on its way im gonna find out the impact location, lie there on my back and just wait. It will be an awesome death.

Your right that would be sweet! I wouldnt feel a thing!
I can imagine God and Death playing a game of checkers...
The Mayans believed that we were living in the 5th dimension, and that there would not be a sixth.
Other outcomes not mentioned AI, and the Earth Rejecting us(plaque? what does happen when weve destroyed the earths homeostasis?)
Another good choice would be All of the above.(would you "believe" then?)
A possible worldwide revolution could also help trigger it.
Titanic and Anarkistdream seem to have a good order of events.

My answer? " In Fire"

Well there will be a series of apocalyptic events. And guess what, the next one on schedule is the Explosions of 2007 & 2008. The next major one after that is the Comet of 2012. Likely to be Sunday, December 23, 2012. So don't expect a Christmas gift from me that year. There are many many more predictions and details about them. If you are interested, contact me via pm. I've said enough here.

End of the world is strikingly different from the end of the CIVILISED world... The end of the civilised world will, in my mind, come about from some kind of poisoning of the environment or else through global warming, but I think humanities will to survive will mean there will still be human populations living at a much lower stage of development (hopefully sustainable) for millions of years.

Suddenly and unexpectedly. They didn't exactly think that, but that's what scientists say. And of course, you should always put your faith in ancient Mesoamerican peoples. :D

Global Warming leads to mild climate changes, then a sudden 'deep freeze' (s 'micro-iceage'), which leads to widespread famine on a biblical level. As war ravages the developing world, the oil supplies located there are cut off. Tensions that were already brewing between the major powers bloom into war in an attempt to quell the third world and seize the oil supply. WWIII ends in nuclear holocaust as the iceage grips the world.

In essence, all of the above in a chain reaction. But, there will be survivors, and odds are, remaining industrial infrastructure. It will be the dawn of a new age, the slate wiped clean; New nations will rise and fail as they tend to do, perhaps only one will arise and lead us on a crusade to the stars.

I hope it doesn't have to come to that, though.

FOOLS ITS THE ALIENS  no i think WWIII will screw everyone over hopefully im long gone by then

a nuclear war would no doubt be at the tail end of WWIII so its kind of a mixture, it would then cause a nuclear winter so its also climate change. nobody likes us humans

Caleb if there are any apocalyptic events this year or next, i will convert. As long as you agreee that if dec 23 2012 passes without a comet wiping us out, you will calm down and realise it's all a load of bollocks. At least you're young enough to get out early when these things don't come to pass.

Im not sure that anyone has posted it, cause it maybe doesnt perfectly relate to the topic, but as far as i know there are three commonly accepted possibilities for future society, with 2 and 3 being more likely than 1.

1) Society comes to some kind of understanding and great leap. People stop trying to kill and exploit each other all the time and theres a new solidarity formed. Though this seems to usually be championed under some kind of leftist system, i dont really see a reason why it cant happen under any ideology, essentially the important thing is we put together a society that is as close to utopian as we are going to get.

2) now for the realistic options...Capitalism eventually takes on its global effect and we enter more of a totally administered society. Books like 1984 or Brave New World, maybe even the movie Brazil. The culture is a consumption culture to as high a degree as possible, and the individual feels the greatest sense of alienation as they are seemingly reduced to simply a cog in the machine. Quite possibly the most techologically advanced and materially wealthy society, it just tends to reduce a lot of notions of what it means to be human to bunk.

3) Humanity continues competition until the planet simply cannot handle the competition no longer. As we recognize this, War begins to outbreak and nuclear weapons are used. Societies are essentially destroyed as over some great period of time there is a general destruction of as many things as possible seemingly. The people who are left are forced to start over and pick up the pieces with very little if nothing remaning from the old system.

These are at least some of the more common theories that ive heard when people talk about future society.

 (again)

[sarcasm]I completely agree Australians would lack the firepower and man power necessary to defend themselves against killer koalas! I mean really, koalas only live in Eucalyptus trees and only eat the tree's leaves. Plus koalas are slow, small, and sleep most of the day. Along with the fact that dingos would eat most of the koalas on the ground during the first assault on the humans, there is no way in hell Australia stands a chance![/sarcasm]

But I think your theory on the ant koala alliance is stupid. [sarcasm]The ants would surely betray the koalas and establish a new country in place of Australia called - Jaralaf[/sarcasm]

That's exactly what they want you to think, and you forgot the dropbears.

I hope I'm long gone before the end of the world , or of course, WWIII.
But wont there be ways to live on other planets in our solar system in like 100 years?

But ultimatley, the earth exploding would wipe EVERYTHING out within a 2 billion miles to it ( or somthing like that?)

If we don't consume ourselves to death and find a new cleaner and more efficient energy source, once we become a trans-galactic civilization we might become the dreaded aliens! I bet some redneck will become president of earth and abduct poor Alpha-centaurians and have them enslaved :(

POLOTICS will destroy humanity. Everything revolves around polotics and eventually one of these countries is going to get tired of being suppressed and cause mass chaos. Either that or a bad combo of "presidents" across the globe who are all greedy snot faces like little bushy boy jr.

Hopefully, by the dawn of the 22nd century we will have at least inter-planetary travel and colonies on most of the larger rocky bodies in the solar system. If we are very lucky, in 50 years.

Well, let's break it down shall we?

How will civilization end? Probably by tearing itself apart with its own strict social codes and dumb rules. My preferred prediction will only come if there comes a time when those in power are overtaken by those who want the power then we'll see how things trend from there.

How will humanity end? So far signs are pointing to us all wiping each other out with some form of weapon, be it nuclear or with sharpened sticks.

How will the world end? Either a massive asteroid impact that cracks the planet open like an egg, or when the sun goes red giant and blows the earth apart by causing the molten rock beneath the surface to overheat and release its energy kinetically.

We already are, were just not as good at raping things for their natural resources yet. Look at history, then add aliens.

Only hope would be that we stupidly piss them off in a first contact situation, then wed have to build ourselves back up again using stones

(I like the B5 story, when we get scared and shoot the minbari. They kill every human all the way back to earth)
