Winter 2013 Nuclear Competition

In the last four days we have had seven games conclude, bringing the total up to 41. This means that to register for the list and be rated you must have completed six of the 41 Competition games (15% minimum). Not so many! Ten players make the participation cutoff and are therefore listed below in the Skill Index. Congratulations to AlexEverard who maintains a death grip on the lead in the Competition with his high performances over a number of games.

There are a few players who have had even more outstanding results: wombat4 has 2 golds in his two Competition games, Flann has two golds and a silver in his three Competition games, and 11Joan11 has a gold and a silver in her two concluded Competition games. However, we have no way of knowing if these players could sustain these high performance rates like AlexEverard has over a significant number of games. That is why there is a participation cutoff in order to be listed. If you know these three, give them encouragement to play more games to see if they can win the Competition.

To try to get more participation by people who have demonstrated nuclear spoils know how and who are close to having enough points, or who barely have enough points to make the cutoff, I have taken the unusual step of inviting them to Competition games where they have shown they are most skilled. That should sharpen the competitiveness!

Since my last post, twelve games have concluded. So there have been a lot of updates. Crazystef is starting to come on strong. He or she won two golds and two bronzes in those twelve games. I find myself having to take out his or her territories more often in our games together too. Sorry about that Crazy.

The total number of games concluded is now 53. Our Competition consists of 200 games and so is now officially more than one quarter completed. Since the total number of games completed is 53, and 15% of that is 7.95, this means you need a minimum of 7 games completed to qualify for the skill index scoreboard. Only eight players make the participation cutoff and are therefore listed below. Congratulations to AlexEverard who maintains his lock on first place. All of a sudden though his lead is beginning to look surmountable, at least to me.

I have opened ten new Competition games just now you can join, most of them on very popular maps that tend to fill up fast. So hurry!

Since my last post, seven games have concluded. Your favorite Competition director had a bit of a lucky streak lately. I won three golds, a silver, and a bronze in those seven games. Much to my surprise I am now in first place. I have mixed feelings about this. I really don't think it's quite right for a playing director to win his own Competition. Come on guys; save me from the shame! :lol:

The total number of games concluded is now 60. 15% of 60 is 9.0, so that means a minimum of 9 games completed is necessary to qualify for the skill index scoreboard. The same eight players as last time are all that make the participation cutoff and are thus listed below.

I have an announcement to make! For the first 100 games of the Competition I have set the maps up so that the Initial Troops deployment was automatic. Now that we have all gained some experience and fighting prowess on these twenty maps, enough probably to form strategies, I am going to up the skill factor for the last 100 games by setting the Initial Troops placement to manual. Now, you get to decide how you want to place your armies right at the start.

Strategic tip for initial troop placement: Think hard about what has happened in the other games on the map you have played. Try to contest the areas people seem to be less interested in so that you don't get attacked like crazy. Example: in the normal classic map, many people go for Australia or the other two small continents in order to get the bonus and easily protect it. This would be good strategy if you are the only person considering it. I have found, however, that people often won't try right away for the larger continents. If you are not being attacked, your chances increase greatly. And if you can lock down a big bonus area in a fog of war game with eight people. Well, you are pretty much golden to win.

Another strategy tip: Sometimes, your big dump (if that is the strategy you choose at the beginning) ends up right beside someone else's. I have experimented with trying to blow that other person's stack away right at the start in order to use "attacker's dice" for better odds. Boy, do majors and up get irritated when you do that! Many have called me nasty names, which makes me feel much better about having destroyed them. Some have even enemied me as a result! Anyway, even if your 15 vs 12 is successful and you move let's say 6 in to the territory, very often you have so depleted yourself that it turns out poorly. Nowadays I tend to try to run away a bit from other people's big stacks instead. Not always, so I don't commit to doing that in every case, but that appears to usually work a little better. I just wanted to share a little of my experience to try to help my readers out to the extent I can.

Since my last post, ten games have concluded. As you can see from the standings below, your favorite Competition director's luck has inexplicably also continued. In fact, I am most embarassed to report that I have even managed to extend my first place lead.

Fortunately, there is hope that someone will come along and save me from the shame of winning my own competition. Nicestash has a very impressive 12 points so far in the 7 games he has concluded. Seventy games of our Competition have finished. 15% of 70 is 10.5. Therefore, ten games concluded, or more, is the participation cutoff needed in order to be rated in the Competition. I have no doubt that at nicestash's current participation rate, he will soon be entering the ratings. When he has enough games to be rated, the question is will he still be in the lead? Can he sustain that superior performance? After all, nicestash might have just got lucky those seven games. We do not have enough data yet to conclusively make that determination.

There is some movement in the next few places on the chart. AlexEverard continues his freefall from first. I question the strategy he often adopts of trying to make truces with the player currently in the lead on the map. Perhaps Alex knows something I do not about this game men call Conquer Club. DominatED is moving up fast on the wings of some really nice recent finishes. Will DominatED soon be able to challenge me for first place (or second, if nicestash comes in)? Time will tell.

One more thing I need to mention: please know that in every game I personally play the map. I never target or treat any player whom I have become familiar with any differently than I treat any other player. Not only do I consider doing that beneath me, but it would harm the Competition I am trying to promote. Also, perhaps most importantly, I am working out optimal playing strategies for this form of the game, or trying to. I need to maintain objectivity in my own targetting choices in order to determine if my strategy is sound. Getting personal would totally undermine that. I am a tournament chess player who plays the board, never the person, and I carry that mindset into my CC games. I recognize that others may not share my opinion and may target people, perhaps even me because I am currently the Competition frontrunner. That's okay. The strategies I am working out, or trying to work out, include those adversity factors.

I've never played these games before so I'm pretty pleased with the results. However, since I'm a colonel I think I've still lost points-the last game I won a gained a mere 60 points :S

Hi GQ, thanks for all your effort, look forward to the 'placement' games.

Just to clarify one point however - I tend to truce with whoever I think it beneficial to me, and to them (else I wouldn't expect them to accept), which is v rarely the front runner. In a couple of our joint games I have not turned on a former truce-r on the immediate same turn they take the lead, which confused you both times(*), for what seemed to me good reasons, largely
- my armies were in position to make substantial gains off the people I was already attacking (yes, risky when someone else is heading for a dominant position)
- when I have given a commitment to 'x turns notice' or similar I do almost always keep it (except when I mess up and forget, which has happened)

(*) In one of those games I had done exactly the same thing several times and was continuing to struggle back into contention as a result, but the last one went very, very wrong ...

However, I also find your habit of 'no truce, but I wont attack you just yet' intriguing, and have experimented with that as well to good effect.

One of the hardest maps to figure out how to award points for is the Austro-Hungarian map. Nicestash recently won a game brilliantly there by achieving the objective, but six of his opponents were still in the game, two of them with more territiories owned than Nicestash. Unreal! This is the first time I have seen the like, although Europe 1914 and the Peloponessian map also have objectives that can allow for win of the game early. I award six points per game. So nicestash got the gold for winning it. The person who owned the most territories when Nicestash won got the silver, and I awarded the bronze to the person who owned the second most.

Since my last post, eleven games have concluded. I have hit a dry spell, not even so much as a bronze in those 11 games. So the race for the top three spots has tightened up considerably, as you can see.

Since the total amount of games concluded is now at 81 and a 15% participation rate is needed to get on the chart, we only have seven players who have completed 12 or more competition games. We do have four people in the 9-11 range who could soon come in if they increase their participation rate even slightly: aboynamedboobs, 11Joan11, nicestash, and Wolfboy137.

Okay, I have opened twelve new Competition games with manual initial troops deplyment (109-120) just now that you can join! A few other Competition games are still open from last week too. Good luck!

While I don't think I'm going to be able to end of winning this competition, I am looking forward to my induction into the Skill Index. Also, when did you bring the minimum games needed to 15%? Before it was 10%;

From my February 19 post in this thread in which I introduced the Skill Index concept:

The Skill Index is a number that is derived from the raw number of points won in the competition divided by the number of games played, with some minimum number of games played in order to be listed. ... The minimum number of games played in order to be on the list will probably be set at 30 of the 200 games, maybe 40 (somewhere between 15 and 20 percent of the total number of games offered). Both the Leaderboard and the Skill Index will have importance, but I would like to consider the winner of the Competition to be the player with the highest skill index. I hope this refinement adds to the competetiveness and enjoyment of this competition.

I considered 10, 15, and 20 percent as reasonable minimums at various times and settled on 15% fairly early on. The reason I don't want to bring the number as low as 10% is because if there is a map specialist, he could play just one map of the Competition 20 times successfully and win the entire Competition.

I think you are on course to soon have the amount of participation you will need to qualify, Nicestash, and that when you do you will in all likelihood have the lead. Don't fret; play more! Besides, I enjoy learning from you. I picked up earlier on just how aware you are of each map's objective. Your latest lesson to me (by example) was how to handle would-be truce makers. You seem to mostly ignore them. I think I will give that another try.

Fair enough. Once I get to 30 games I'm done. With the new manual setting, there's WAY too much noobing going around. I don't even have a chance to win by round 3 in half the games I play.

Since my last post, fourteen games have concluded for a total of 95. Fifteen percent of 95 games equals a minimum of 14 for participation rate purposes.

Personally speaking, either my dry spell is continuing or I am being used for target practice. Either way, my skill index continues to descend. However, more importantly, we have two new entrants to the list: nicestash and Wolfboy137! They have been having great success in most of their games in the Competition and are almost always finishing in the money. They also now meet the minimum number of games for the participation rate. They therefore come in right at the top.

Nicestash, I can understand why you want to limit the number of games you play in the Competition. You have probably worked hard to nurse your rating to the high level it is at and don't want to risk it by playing too many games in this competetive an environment. I get it. Frankly, almost no similarly high rated players to you are participating in this Competition. I believe the reason is because it is much easier to nurse, pad, and inflate a rating to the level yours has reached by limiting games to 1-vs-1 games with inexperienced players, playing maps with some hard-to-see feature few if any other players know of, or playing team games on a team with 4 colonels and above vs 4 sergeants and below. These CC players remind me of the type of "big game hunters" who enjoy shooting prey from helicopters and fishing with dynamite. Cowards, each and every one of them. When high rated players do play in a standard tournament, I have noticed it is usually with other high rated players so that like European royalty who marry their cousins they can "keep it in the family," and thus risk less. The result is the same as with European royalty: overly inflated egos and questionable judgement due to lack of objectivity. I give you (nicestash) a lot of credit because you are willing to take risks and meet opponents on a level playing field. You have done this, still maintain a high rank, and in fact are winning this Competition. My hat is definitely off to you! In my book you are significantly stronger than your similarly rated peers; I consider your techniques worthy of close observation.

I also congratulate Wolfboy137 for some really outstanding play lately. I wonder if he can maintain it now that we are all aware of just how good he is!

Congratulations are certainly in order to nicestash for maintaining such a commanding lead. I have no idea how that is even possible. Wolfboy137 sits in clear second waiting to take the lead should nicestash slip up, or fall out of the Competition due to non-participation. Wolfboy137 is no fluke. He is proving his mettle over a large number of games on a lot of different maps. Congrats to AlexEverard who has recovered his form and just moved into third above me. He is really playing well in our games. I seem to be getting people angry enough at me to hand Alex games on silver (no, make that gold) platters. Congrats to locoweed on some nice results lately. I challenge stef to bring that skill index over 0.50. Look out for Funkaholic! He has not played enough games (only 10 concluded) to be rated yet, but he has been playing more often lately. If he does come in, he will be near the top.

As of right now, I have no plans to join any more games unless the manual setting is revoked. It's a silly option considering all the other settings in these games, and one that takes the fun and skill out of it.

I am willing to open the manual settings feature of these games to a vote in order to let the democratic process prevail. I will take votes from May 1 through May 11, 23:59 GMT by any of three means: post to this forum topic, personal message to me, or post on my wall. To all players who have completed at least one Competition game: please vote your preference concerning Initial troops deployment. If there are more votes for Automatic than Manual, I will switch settings back to Automatic for the remainder of the Competition starting May 12.

Manual deployment is not a skill based option, and the vast majority of players would agree with me. Because of this, manual drop is barred from basically every clan war (I've never seen a clan war where it is allowed) and very few tournament directors incorporate it into their tourneys. The reason why manual deployment is so unpopular is because of the high frequency of "noobing". Noobing is where a player (usually inexperienced) attacks a stack with their own, completely destroying any chance either player had of winning. With a manual drop, players generally cluster their troops into somewhere between 1-3 regions, so one instance of noobing can be absolutely devastating. While it is possible to leave 3s on each region like in standard deployment, this puts a player at an equally heightened disadvantage-everyone else is more compact, and as they look to take a bonus, they feel no qualms with taking out a 3 because the bonus will yield a much larger bonus. Some players claim that there is a lot of "skill" in determining the drop, but this can only be argued to apply in 1v1 or team games. With 8 players it's impossible to predict where everyone will start meaning no matter what you do, you can very easily be noobed.

Since my last post, a dozen games have concluded for a total of 118. To be rated in the Competition, a fifteen percent participation rate is required, which means you need to have a minimum of 17 games concluded in order to achieve a skill index rating and to know your place in the Competition.
