Honestly, your best bet if you've never played before is wait for a 'noob' game to open up. Usually a smaller game with less complex roles run by a very experienced mod with the patience and mindset to help everyone with simple questions. jnd is a great mod and a good player but one of his games would be very tough for a first game, they tend to have quite complex roles and be swarmed with pretty experienced players [HINT, ga/Serbia/ML/S_L/anyone, really] (which sucks when you're one of the few new guys).

Mafia is a tough game to get the hang of, start with an easy game before a complexed one so you can get the basics before you venture into something like this. I've played 30+ games on this site and many more but I still join games I have a hard time following because of their complexness. Besides there are a huge amount of roles to familiarize yourself with before you can consider yourself even an o.k. player at this game (many players here have that problem).

Theres 'noob' games starting all the time, or at least small games with newer players, those are your best bet. I mean this in the nicest possible way and not trying to be 'anti the new guy' at all (a common problem around here) after all I'm a noob compared to those that still play from when I first started, which jnd is one of; just trying to help.

The poorest advice to the start of a mafia career I've ever heard... When they teach this game in a classroom setting it take 2-4 classes (90 minutes periods) of learning before you even play a game to familiarize yourself with the roles and mechanics of the game. Granted real-life mafia is harder then this sort but its still applicable that you should be familiar with something before you attempt it, especially a complex version of it...
