It is still a fascnating fact, and one of the most magnificently useless I've ever seen.
I'll eat heavycola's hat if you can find me one instance of St John's Wood, London anywhere on the internet as "Saint John's Wood". Here this should get you started - http://www.google.co.uk/search?client=f ... gle+Search

I haven't really got time to sit here typing this let alone google for St. John's Wood.
But my point is simple - if this wasn't an abbreviation, it would be "ST John" not "ST. John".

Have you ever been to Saint Reatham by the way?

after using "Thou whoreson zed, thou unnecessary letter" as an insult in one of his plays, Shakespeare wrote a little known work rating the latent terror in each letter (unsurprisingly rating x first, while l, remarkably enough, came third).

In London, if during the course of an arrest the arresting officer's helmet is removed from his head, then the apprehended suspect is entitled to several hundred pounds of compensation for attempted unlawful arrest. This is the product of old Victorian legislation which lays down strict regulations on the correct dress for police constables in all of the Metropolitan Boroughs.

On the other hand due to ancient laws relating to clan-policing, in Scotland the police are permitted to arrest you for any reason they choose so long as they are wearing the same pattern of tartan as you. Suspects not wearing tartan are exempt from this provision

I tried to find a donkey related death statistic...but could not find anything more reliable than the old rumor that more people die per year via donkey than via airplane crash...which was apparently not possible to verify.
