Very good choices, Prowler! Sadly, Frankie Venom died last week.

I'm a big fan of old school punk but it's tough to say who my favourite punk band is or really delineate what is punk and what isn't. Sadly, a lot of punk bands who originally put out great records became caricatures of themselves over time. This happened to the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, the Damned, Dead Kennedys and so many other great artists. The best thing I can do is offer my favourite punk albums from the true era of punk.

Late Sixties:
The Stooges - Funhouse
MC5 - Kick Out the Jams

Seventies:
Ramones - Ramones
The Damned - Damned Damned Damned
The Buzzcocks - Another Music in a Different Kitchen
Television - Marquee Moon
Heartbreakers - L.A.M.F. '77
The Dead Boys - Young Loud and Snotty
Richard Hell and the Voidoids - Blank Generation
Sham 69 - Tell Us the Truth
Stiff Little Fingers - Inflammable Material
Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks...
Roses are red
Shit is brown
Nothing but assholes

I don't listen to too much punk, but I thoroughly enjoy Pennywise.

I'd go with The Clash, powerful powerful lyrics, especially in songs like War and Peace, I Fought the Law and White Riot. Although that song was labelled racist by Sex Pistols, I would disagree as they didn't understand the true meaning behind the song. Gotta love other songs like London Calling and Rock the Casbah. The Clash had a lot more political depth than the Sex Pistols, who seemed more like mindless nihilists. No disrespect to any Sex Pistols fans, that is just my interpretation.

I felt compelled to mention The Saints - They started up in Brisbane in the 1970's, but don't get the big time recognition coming from Australia

Awesome band

Also, I thought it was interesting everyone was mentioning Rise Against. Their first two albums we're ok, and their third one I liked better, but since then they have gone downhill in a massive way. Also I got sick of them because their lyrics are really pretenious, they're trying to say something important with out ever really saying anything.

Kudos to pimpdave for mentioning Fugazi, and on the same token I'll have to put Minor Threat in there (though are people going to get anal about punk/hardcore definitions?)

Otherwise there is Propagandhi, Mischief Brew, Against Me! (OLD ALBUMS... not the new wave shit) and more that I am not compelled to mention at the moment

For the poll, I'd side with The Clash and The Ramones, but my favorite two in this genre would be The Misfits (til 1983) and Black Flag.

I voted Dead Kennedys..

DK was my favorite band for quite some time. Although I think the band now is a joke without Jello.

Anyway the following are my fav. punk bands of all time...

Descendents/ALL
Circle Jerks
Misfits (with Danzig)
Operation Ivy
Minor Treat
Black Flag (with Rollins)
Dead Kennedys
Sub Humans

How so? The Jonas Brothers have sold more albums than almost all of the artists listed in this thread. Obviously their music rings loudly in someone's ears. Their pop-rock genre was only fostered by the roots planted by the previously listed artists. Just because you dislike a band for any reason does not mean that those who do are trolls... furthermore, I suggest that anyone who places such a large and obtrusive image in the thread is a larger troll.

I stand by my Jonas Brothers statement. Them or Face to Face.
