Good. I don't know if this is true or not, but I certainly hope it is.
Yeah people have less. I figure I pay over 50% of my earning in taxes, easily.

Is this an example of how to follow the train of thought within a thread, or is it an example of a complete non-sequitor?

What makes you think these (probably very rich) corporations wouldn't have more influence when all the rules are gone?

Ah, so a reduction in the size of government means total anarchy with no rules, no courts system, and no enforcement. What a bold assumption, sir!
All the rules pertaining to that specific area the corporations work in. I'm talking mostly environmental and health laws.
Another bold assumption!

Yeah, there's no consequences for severely polluting rivers in the US, and there's no such thing as class-action suits or any means of enforcement, punishment, and compensation. Because, if the government is reduced in size, then ALL THESE THINGS WOULD DISAPPEAR!!! [insert SNORRI's CANADIAN WAR CRY!][/sarcasm]

Well aren't we talking about a reduced government where ALL THESE THINGS DISAPPEAR?
No, we aren't. Only you are because you make some major assumptions, which I already listed and which I find unreasonable as I've already implied through my way of joking.

I suggest you cool down your Canadian Anger with some refreshing Canadian Beer:

Also, most people already have a lot of what they need.

But.. it is part of why our economy is tanking. Becuase our system, as it is set up, depends on growth. "Sucess" today is measured in terms of growth, not sustainability.
What is sustainability?

And how is it different from market equilibrium?

If you mean the standard definition, market equilibrium is when market outputs equal market inputs exactly. Sales equal production. This is a theoretical idea, not something truly achievable except in tiny closed systems.

Sustainability means a system that can continue in perpetuity and really has nothing to do with markets (that is, you can have sustainable capitalist, communist, etc systems). Sustainable systems are closer to equilibrium than non-sustainable ones, but there is still variability, volatility. Take agriculture. Fully sustainable agriculture is not "even" agriculture. You still have variations of weather, bad managers, etc. However, overall, you can achieve a system that continues. In the sense of agriculture, the products produced don't even have to be the same. Sustainable agriculture practices include rotating crops, but also allow for meeting varying demands of people.. just not in a way that prohibits future production.

Nothing using irreplaceable resources is truly sustainable. however, if the supply is large, then humans can more or less deal as if they were unlimited. however, as we see with oil, we have to be careful to take the limits into account and not build up a dependence on resources beyond capacity. Currently, we have and that is the root of our problems, (though there is a lot of surface stuff going on as well that might seem more pressing to various people).

Seriously, I'm asking.
Court rulings, actually. I can't recall the specifics off-hand, but yes...there is no doubt in my mind that the ability to file class action suits will not be around much longer. Let me do some digging today when I get home from work and I'll point it out to you.
thegreekdog, this is the specific case I had in mind when I made that post. Unfortunately, it's not an isolated one:
http://www.economicpopulist.org/content ... n-law-suit

http://wsws.org/articles/2011/jun2011/supr-j21.shtml

http://www.whatthefolly.com/2011/06/20/ ... tion-suit/

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/06/ ... op+News%29
I have to read the opinion (which I won't do), but this is troubling.

Is that a micro brew in Quebec? I love trying out new micro brews. Keith's is my everyday beer. But I love nothing more than going to the LCBO or Beer Store and trying something new. I have a collection of over 200 beer that I have tried from all around the world on my wall at home. I'll keep an eye out for that one.

It isn't quite a micro brew as you will find it in most Quebec convenience stores. The brewery is called "unibroue" here's their website http://www.unibroue.com/en/beers/family/actuelles/. (they even have a find our beers tab so you can see who might have them near you)

Nope. Nothing in my area. Will keep my eye out though at the LCBO.

I confess, I hardly drink beer any longer, though an occasional St Pauli dark or such. When I did, it was microbrews.

Anyway, all the Canadiens I worked with drank it. We could not drink, even when not working, since we were still technically working for the Government. So... I will leave it to you Canadiens to work out the beer bit.

Something tells me Snorri has some better options available to him, though...

The democrats need to whip their party into shape and get some real representatives like the Republican party has started to do and continues to do. We have to do out part to elect better people who can put American Gov'ts spending problem and credit rating problem and balance sheet problem ahead of politics.

The Tea Party is changing Republicans, hopefully for good. Republicans are finally starting to practice what they have always preached.

I hope this next vote will prove that politics as usual is a thing of the past. You might understand what I am trying to say if you view it under your prepared context of "republican infighting".

The Tea Party is landin blows, and giving Boehner the backbone he needs. I think Boehner is just there for the money and no way in hell is he TP. However, the Tea Party can use him to score a victory and push him to stand his ground and support him to push through a solution to the problem. I think it's possible we might have a solution come next week. It won't be perfect for everyone, but the ship will steer in the right direction.
