I was working with a Lebenese guy that didn't like it there. I can't remember exactly how he put it but they were too strict was basically my understanding. He is a bit difficult to get along with so I'm not suprised.
I would say most of the people here that are from Lebenon or have Lebenese parents are pretty decent. I've only met a few that are religious.

I have studied (not read mind you, but studied) the Quran, and have found it to be a cheap ripoff of Judaism, with a smattering of Christianity thrown in. Before Muhammed, each Arab tribe had a tribal god. Muhammed was a member of the Qurash tribe, and their tribal god was named Allah. There was an image to him in the Kabah as the "god of crops". Muhammed simply elevated his tribal god above the others. To suggest that Allah is the same God that the Hebrews worshipped is beyond absurd - you will find him in the Old Testament, but under the name of Moloch or Chemosh - Canaanite names for the "god of crops", or "fertility god.
The Quran is rife with ridiculous errors also. One that sticks out in my mind is where a story of Gideon is related from the book of Judges in the Old Testament, but Muhammed attributes the story to king Saul (David's predecessor). Not surprising for someone who could neither read nor write - for those of you who don't know, the Quran was written by an anuensis or "ghost writer". Muhammed dictated it. If you look at the history of Muhammed (Will Durant has some excellent material) you will see how the writing of the Quran coincided with Muhammed's wants and needs in his rise to power, culminating in his breaking a truce on a holy day to get rid of his main enemy (Allah told him it was ok).
Muhammed was a fraud and a coward, and i have to be somewhat leery of the mindless fanatics who would follow such a man. Silly me.

The answer to your question is that the Qaba is the first standing alter dedicated to Allah by Abraham and his first son Ishmael. Actually it should be the Jews we should fear, that all comes from the TORAH. The Christians believe in the Gospels of Christ where Jesus taught tollerance, forgiveness, and love...don't you remember the girl that was going to be stoned to death and Jesus stepped between her and the mob and commanded them:"...those among you that are without sin may cast the first stone." Nobody threw a stone, because they realized that they all were sinners and no one was innocent...just like that girl.
Now, I am not saying that I am a Christian, but when it comes to teachings...sometimes Jesus (or whoever wrote the Gospels for that matter) didn't do so bad. If you read the New Testament, there are some real good teachings as opposed to the OldTestament. But you know what? If you ever read the Teachings of Buddha (who lived 500 years before Christ) you will find almost exactly the same teachings and sayings, go figure? So what I am saying to you is that you should read all of these books and writings: Old and New testaments, Quran, and Teachings of Buddha...all of which have some positive teachings for all of us to learn from.
