Best Sci-Fi Movies

Did anyone see that film Moon last year? I really liked it. Probably not the best ever but definitely worth a shout.

At the time they were made Metropolis (1927), 2001:A Space Odyssey (1968), Alien (1979) and The Terminator (1984) are all significant cinema... but I think Alien has held up the best of this group.
The sequels Aliens (1986) and Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) were entertaining films
and I enjoyed Alien vs Predator (2004) too.

Time Bandits (1981) ...time travel
Slaughterhouse-Five (1972) ...unstuck in time and extraterrestrials

Dune is great read that has yet to be made into a decent movie.

Star Wars, Back to the Future and the last is a toss up between Blade Runner and Alien

I'm not at all surprised that many people on an internet forum, with the attention span of a kid with ADD, think 2001 is boring.

Why is Dune on this poll even? How can Dune even be on ANY "best" list of movies? In any of it's iterations?

it's my dark horse. I know there were problems with the original release, but have you seen the new special edition? puts a lot more together. it also stands out as unique and often times surpasses in many ways compared to the rest of the choices (adult content/gore/homosexuality).

Well, I loved Dune. It was not just sci-fi space stuff. It was not just a bunch of explosions. It certainly was not a bunch of special effects. It was the rich plot, albeit complicated (make your head hurt?)

Also it has cult status factor.

Nope...I absolutely LOVED the book. The movie (all of them) was utter drek in my opinion.

It's not really fair grouping "Star Trek" all in one. #1, "ST the Motion(less) Picture" sucked. #2, "The Wrath of Khan" might be one of the best movies ever made, sci-fi or not. (finally, something on which I agree with Neanderpaul and Woodruff!) The others are somewhere in between.

That movie was just not my cup of tea and I like The Matrix but it didn't qualify as top 3 to me. I agree with Blade Runner.

Soylent Green of course is another - the idea behind it is slightly terrifying.
Original Star Wars of course.
Some Star Trek movies as well, like Voyager.
Any remake of Philip Dick's books are normally well done, such as Minority Report and Total Recall. I haven't seen Blade Runner yet.

Uhm. Notable mention to Starship Troopers just for the lulz, cause there's some funny, outrageous scenes in it.

Yeah, starship troopers is like a deep film.. You have to actually study it and watch it twice to really get how funny it is. I love it now, when I first watched it, hated it.

I am told that Dune in its original form might have been good, but it was cut heavily to meet studio limits on playing time. The version we see sometimes rather stinks. I prefer the books, by far.

I won't provide any spoilers, except that it is definitely in 2001's shadow, and although a really good movie, boils down to being more of a well made, long Twilight Zone episode than a film that pushes any boundaries. A promising first feature for a rookie director, and further evidence that Sam Rockwell should have more leading roles. Definitely good for the Sci-Fi genre, but doesn't manage to transcend beyond that, the way that Blade Runner, Terminator, Back to the Future, or The Matrix did.

And the score was really good and the special effects were all pretty much small models, not CGI, which honestly looked more real. As a child of the 80s, I appreciated that. It worked for this movie.
