Lol somehow I don't think Brazil and Portugal will go all out for that one. Both are qualified, there will be little incentive...
Well done Slovakia yesterday, never thought I'd see the day Italy having a shitty defense, I guess Lippi trusted too much his world champs and 4 years took a toll on most of them. Denmark-Japan was pretty amazing, two beautiful free kicks and another lousy ref calling a BS penalty, giving two or three yellows for the players being too slow to play in the freaking first half... I could see Honda not staying in Moscow for long after this one. Their goalkeeper is awesome too, stopping the penalty but the defense hadn't followed up.
Anyway today's big game is definitely Chile-Spain, the goal average will be decisive and with two teams that are used to have the ball, I hope it'll be the last surprise of this group stage :D

Except that the winner of the group goes into the supposedly weaker side of the elimination bracket.

But yeah, the Chile/Spain game will probably be the match of the day.

Where has this referee been all my life?

Not only has he booked someone for diving, ha has also booked someone for trying to get another player sent off. Wonders will never cease.

Here's the bracket for the rest of the tournament. My bet for the Semis is US loses to Brazil and Germany loses to Portugal. Brazil vs. Portugal for the cup and US vs. Germany for third place.

Actually, I may change that. Forgot that Spain wasn't in there yet. Hmmm. I'm not sure about what is likely going to be a Spain vs. Portugal match. I think whoever wins that makes it to the finals though.

I'm really impressed with Japan. If the USA loses they'll be worth rooting for.

you guys can't be serious. the poll has the US winning it all, and this crazy doctor states the US will reach the semis.

omg. people, lets try to keep this at least somewhat realistic.

Geez. Calm down Pedro. Don't take your bad bets out on us! ;)
Seriously though. The US plays Ghana in the group of 16. US is the higher ranked team, but with the Ghana being the one remaining African team, they're not going to be a pushover. The US has a better offense, but Ghana has a better defense. My prediction is Ghana scores first, but it's a tie game at the end of regulation. US wins on PKs.

After that, US plays either Uruguay or South Korea (I'd bet Uruguay). That will be a tougher one, but the US has pulled the necessary wins out of their asses so far. I'm willing to bet on them winning that one as well (though I wouldn't put a lot down!).

That gets the US to the semis where they most likely face Brazil (possibly Netherlands, but that would be an upset). There's no way the US wins in the semis. Being reasonably optimistic about their fate, I'd give them a 4th place finish.

You know, for someone who complains that this forum is too America-centric you seem to keep injecting it into whatever topic out of nowhere. Not only that, but you seem to like politicizing it as well.

26 June games:
US over Ghana
Uruguay over South Korea

27 June games:
Germany over England
Mexico over Argentina (this one is probably wrong, but I'm rooting for Mexico here!)

28 June games:
Netherlands over Slovakia
Brazil over Chile

29 June games:
Japan over Paraguay
Spain over Portugal

US has a very reasonable shot at getting to the semis. You're the one not being realistic.

Well in this thread I'm basing it on the fact hat USA has 24 votes and is the most voted for winner, in a competition that I doubt the USA would win. Until America provides a team with about 2-3 excellent players that might just carry the rest of the average team.

All teams that win this cup have a couple of great players, or the team is just psychic in it's understanding of passing, I'd love to see America win the world cup because I'd love to see the whole of the USA embrace football as a sport.

But based on what I've seen so far, I think that a decent outside bet would be Japan.
They play as a team, don't have the mental weight on them as a possible winner, and can take a free kick with that weird ball and stick it in the back of the net.

I feel weird saying this, But GO JAPAN!!!!!

I'm not really disagreeing with you, but surely the US qualifies as something better than "average", as you say.

To win this world cup from now, you need to win 4 games. by the law of averages, an average team won't do it, but there is an outside chance that in 4 knock-out game situation, a strange team can win it, if they get the breaks. This applies to anyone still left in it.
But the semis normally remove the average teams.

I could agree with all of those except for Mexico over Argentina. Both of the June 29 games will come down to Golden Goals or PKs.
