Maybe I should specify. I think it's a "necessary evil" for politicians/public figures because people are always going to take offense to the dumbest things and blow them out of proportion. I have been called racist IRL when I make innocent comments before thinking about how they can be construed as offensive. I figure anybody should be able to say whatever they want. There's no reason you shouldn't be able to have a fireman extinguish your Christmas tree that a retarded midget lit on fire. But you might want to be politically correct as a form of, what Woodruff said, politeness. Some people will take offence to such terms and so you might want to choose to be politically correct. That extends to businesses as well. They should be able to choose to be politically correct, and if they choose not to, that's their prerogative to risk alienating those that take offence to Christmas (or any other thing). If you work for that company/union, you should abide by that choice or risk getting fired. Nobody is shoving it down your throats, it's all about personal choice. If you don't want to be politically correct, then don't. Just don't get all pissy when people get offended by something you've said because of it.
