Classifying maps as standard or special rules

Concise description:
I think it would be cool/useful if every map was classified as a standard map (basic bonus rules, maps of continents/countries/cities/basic fantasy maps, maybe like autodeploy for a capital or something is ok) or a special rule maps (weird rules, i.e. if you control Darth Vadar and his lightsaber you get one bonus army....sorry, star wars was on tonight).

Specifics:
Obviously the tricky part about classifying the maps will be where to draw the line. This could be up to the maps creators, the foundry, or the people of the forum on a map by map basis. Another way might be to set specific rules that a map either falls into or doesn't. Sorry for suggesting a somewhat open ended idea but i think if the details can be worked out it would be worth it.

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
Searchability. It would be great when going to gamefinder to only search for basic maps or only for wacky ones. You could also work it into the random map feature and make a random map setting, a random standard map setting, and a random special map setting. There might be other advantages to classifying maps that I don't see but that might become apparent with time.

The maps no doubt need to be classified and organized differently. By difficulty level, type etc.

Its long overdue.

The best benefit will go to the new player, who may very well want to try the difficult maps, but may not want to every single time... or at least should get to know what they are in for.

The other problem with classification is that the options of each map will change its difficulty level of the map.

Doodle is pretty easy, but on 6 player standard speed escalating...its as hard a game as any.

Well the map info databse already has something like this. It gives the territory counts & all relevant features of each map. Try it:

Done, pretty much as requested, though I have not updated it with the latest Beta versions.

These are great ways to sort the maps, now from here what I want to see is using this classification system to improve the gamefinder feature so that we can search for only standard maps or only advanced rules maps (or only autodeploy maps or only bombardment maps). This would eliminate situations where you want a basic game and 30 city moguls and realm of mights pop up because it has the same settings as the game you want.

Additionally I would it swinging if there was a feature where when you start a game you can pick random standard map or random advanced rule map; instead of just random map where it could be anything from doodle earth to city mogul.

The gamefinder feature would be very useful and the random map modfication would make it more usable....both improvements.

I like this because I think it would help newer players get into the swing of things. Mo, I feel your pain on the million City Mogul games.

I was keeping up to date with this back when I was premium and more or less "lived" on CC, but since I backed off, I don't think anyone else was interested in continuing. If more people like it, and someone is able to keep up with it, it might get moved into a more official location. However, admin does have quite a few other priorities. For now, if you think its helpful, just pass it on.

Think you missed the whole point of why I wanted maps classified, this is more for the sake of searchability in gamefinder than in wondering what maps are. What you did is good work but I was looking for it to be incorporated into the game. I guess how i titled the subject was misleading, sorry.

This is something that's been discussed quite a bit in the foundry over the years. However, for all the work that was put into it, management must have decided that they like the current set-up better. 'Cause an alphabetical list of 150+ maps is way better than a classification system with more visual flair, apparently.
