Are you sick of confusing Latin phrases?

Post by john9blue »

Seriously, not all of us are genius level Classical scholars. "Sine qua non"? "Caveat emptor"? "Coitus interruptus"? What the hell...

I'm sick of having to Google all of this crap. Speak English or gtfo!

Using confusing language is not my usual MO. I'm not even sure if that's proper use of MO (modus aperendi) I'm sure I spelled it wrong.

I agree. I had to learn a fair amount of latin and greek (mostly suffixes and prefixes, not speech) to understand scientific terminology. There it (dead language) is used intentionally so that it stays relatively consistant throughout all modern languages.

However, general use of it seems to be a way of folks claiming superiority. Ironically, they miss the point that true intelligence requires communication and communication requires someone else to understand.

Of course, if you just want to understand a traditional Roman Catholic Mass or are in the field of translation.. that is another story. Neither of those are common useage, however.
