High Rank=Freestyle?

Post by Funkyterrance »

Nearly every time I try to join a game with anyone Colonel or above I stop and notice its freestyle and decide against it (I don't enjoy freestyle). How many people use this tactic to rise through the ranks? Could they do it without freestyle?

I've played less than 10 freestyle games. My buddy Soul Reader 8.0 is a brig and I don't think he's ever played one.

most who get up there do so based on one thing. freestyle is one way but for others it is playing quads on an obscure map against random people.

there are quite a few(read lot) players who get in the top without freestyle or teamgames.. just 1vs 1 is a lot harder though

Playing a lot of private games with similarly ranked players is effective at maintaining your rank without farming.

I've looked through some of the responses and I see this thread going in a very negative direction, so I thought I'd put in my two cents and try to put it in a more positive light.

Basically, there are specialists in every game type on CC, and just like in real life, specialists will outperform generalists. That's not saying anything bad about them; it's just reality. You wouldn't say a neurologist is a bad doctor because he chooses not to be a general practitioner, and you wouldn't sneer at him because he manages to (probably) earn more money than the GP.

Freestyle is a world unto itself. I'm not good at it, so I tend to avoid it, but I do play a game on it every now and then. Basically there are freestyle masters who rise through the ranks that way, yes. There are also large (6 or more player) escalating specialists, and there are 1v1 masters, and there are the Trips and Quads masters. And there are specialists on complex maps, and Assassins, and so on and so on and so on.

Basically if you want to be a top contender in anything, you have to specialize. If you're a dilettante like me and like to try a bit of this and a bit of that, you'll probably always bounce around in the middle ranks.

Very well put.

Freestyle is not the be all end all. I have freestyle gold, though I'm not really sure how because I've probably only played 5 freestyle games in the last two years, but I digress.

If you want in on sequential games with high ranks, then go to callouts and look up the 2,000+ or 1,600+ plus or whatever threads. There are plenty of sequential games in those.

As far as looking for games against colonels in public games? Yeah, not going to be a lot of options, since very few high ranking players make public games.
Highest rank: 48th. Highest score: 3,384. Feb. 9, 2014.

you /people who're good can get colnel + without freestyle. often with team games or private games i.e. 8 man classic escalating which seems to be quite common. i could probably get to colnel again without freestyle if i wanted.
